No word can describe the emotions felt during this recital by Benjamin Appl and James Baillieu at Carnegie Hall. The program was so well put together and the artists were at the top of their games.
I was stunned by the James MacMillan piece (The children).
Ok and the baritone is super cute and his eyes are so expressive!!!

So, the story goes thus: Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson released a double album with classical and contemporary compositions, then sent the music to other artists, asking them to rework his recordings.

The “Intermezzo” from Brahms’ “7 Fantasies”, Op. 116, was picked by singer Álfheiður Erla Guðmundsdóttir, also hailing from Iceland, who made it into a lullaby to her then just a few weeks old son.

She wrote a poem and composed new vocal layers; the result is abolutely stunning and very touching. Listen to “Notturno”:

I attended a wonderful concert yesterday at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. Mark Elder and the Halle Orchestra were on top form. The Brahms Violin Concerto featured the superb playing of soloist Augustin Hadelich. The programme included Huw Watkins Symphony No.2, a Halle commission. Huw wrote that he hoped it would 'challenge and entertain' - it certainly did!

A string quartet that I really enjoy is the Doduk quartet, an Amsterdam based group.

Here they interpret Brahms string quartet nr 1 in C minor, op 51/1 The link is to the first movement, but be sure to listen to the whole, the 2nd and 3rd string quartet as well as the string quintet nr 2.

The emotional interpretation gives the Brahms music life. Intense and beautiful.

Time to enjoy some music.
