thinking about what "the algorithm (tm)" even look like on a federated platform

that all said, i haven't looked yet on the github repos to see if anyone has debated this on the mastodon/activitypub page and will be looking that up later

for virality as we know it, some initial ranking/scoring algorithm would have to be run locally on an instance.

maybe just as a starting point (favorites+boosts)/(num users on an instance) with some sort of normalization for the amount of followers a user has. grab the top ten or so toots based on the metric an instance decided.

then the results would have to be sent to an aggregator where "the algorithm (tm)" is run a using the input from all the servers with submissions. results then would have to be relayed to all the contributing servers, but not other servers.

all this would be opt-in to even have a local trending metric or federated trending with "the algorithm (tm)"

the good thing about open source is that "the algorithm (tm)" wouldn't be a black box like it is on other platforms if handled correctly
