“Guyana has already made reparations to the Amerindians. The country is also split between those who have Indian backgrounds, descendants of indentured labourers who kept their culture and maintained some capital and land, and the Africans whose descendants are today locked out of this new economy because of the lack of generational wealth. Africans died to build this country and have been excluded.”

"As the sole imperial power that remained a liberal democracy throughout the twentieth century, Britain claimed to be distinct from Europe’s colonial powers in its commitment to bringing rule of law, enlightened principles, and social progress to its colonies. Elkins contends that Britain’s use of systematic violence was no better than that of its rivals. The British were simply more skilled at hiding it."

At the risk of being regarded as a troll (I'm not, just maybe over-fussy about loose thinking) - what makes you think #Scotland will "soon be free of the Westminster cesspit"?
I should add if I were a #Scot I'd be all for independence - the #union lost all purpose when #britishEmpire dissolved 70 years ago, so why is 1000 yr old nation like #Scotland shackled to an overbearing neighbour still?
But 51% of Scots have to want it

On 16 December 1929, the His Majesty's Airship R100 conducted its first flight. Designed by Barnes Wallis, it later flew a successful trans-Atlantic journey and was photographed over the Canadian Bank of Commerce building in Toronto, which was the then-highest building in the British Empire. Wallis would later invent the bouncing bomb used by RAF Dambusters in 1943. #Trivia #BarnesWallis #HMAirshipR100 #TransAtlanticJourney #CanadianBankofCommerce #BritishEmpire #RAFDambusters #BouncingBomb

This morning in “The Global 18th Century,” we read excerpts from *Letters of the late Ignatius Sancho, an African.” Students did a nice job of relating the letters to Gilroy’s account of Black Atlantic subjectivity, and they arrived—to my delight—at the topic of the coda to my book: the religious pluralism that structures Sancho’s vision of the afterlife. #c18 #BritishEmpire #Literature #BlackStudies
