I was raised in on and yeah, "gaol" is what I reach for first.

The connotations would be significantly different because of different societal/historical baggage. British used incarceration in different ways, and for different purposes both explicit and implicit, from how US used it.

At the end of the day a weird story:
The children's series causes US children to adopt British accents and words too.
So the Americans see how it is, otherwise it's them who export their stuff.
