A couple of months ago I wrote in to ask that the EPAs recommendation to extend the NW Shelf Gas Project to 2070 be reviewed. This is a disaster for the climate and the local peoples rock art that has survived for 1000s of years.

Response from the appeal conveynor below.

This is update 2 on your appeal against Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Report 1727 for the North West Shelf Project Extension.

What’s happened?

Since our last update, we have focussed on concerns raised by appellants about the adequacy of the EPA’s assessment of the proposal’s greenhouse gas emissions. This has included meetings with some appellants with specific expertise in climate change science and carbon accounting.

We have continued to review the EPA’s assessment of the proposal against best available technology, including how greenhouse gas emissions (and other emissions to air) from other liquefied natural gas proposals are considered elsewhere, including in Canada and the United States.

We have also had discussions with the EPA and representatives of the proponent (Woodside Energy) on the status of their respective responses to the appeals.

What’s next?

For the next two months, our investigations will continue to focus on the EPA’s assessment of greenhouse gas emissions as well as potential impacts to rock art from emissions from the proposal. Our investigation will include engagement with Traditional Owner groups and knowledge holders associated with Murujuga.

A developing focus will also be on human health, noting that a number of appeals (including by medical practitioners) have raised concerns over possible adverse health impacts if the proposal is implemented.

When will I hear more?
We will provide all appellants with a further update by the end of February 2023.
