Dianne White Oyler discusses the creation of the N'ko alphabet, based on the Maninka language, by Souleymane Kanté (1922-1987) in 1949 in Haute Guinée (Guinea). She carefully documents N'ko's dissemination by a grassroots literacy campaign that started with Kanté and continues to the present. Her analysis shows the importance of language in transnational identity and the cultural nationalism of Mande-speaking people in West Africa. Oyler also discusses Kanté's and Nko's relationship to Pan-Africanism.

Ivoirien Capitalism: African Entrepreneurs in Côte d'Ivoire by John Rapley

Though studies of capitalism in Africa traditionally focus on the activities of foreign investment, in Côte d'Ivoire capitalist development has been largely the work of a domestic class of entrepreneurs.
This book traces the history of Côte d'Ivoire's capitalist development, beginning with early European contact and bringing the story up to the present decade. Drawing on new data, Rapley's provocative argument refutes all standard assumptions about capitalism in the country. He demonstrates that a dynamic capitalist class has emerged in Côte d'Ivoire, one neither subordinate to foreign interests nor synonymous with the bureaucratic or political elite. These indigenous entrepreneurs, Rapley posits, as a class control the Ivoirien state, and it is indigenous Ivoirien capitalism that has been primarily responsible for the growth of the country's economy.

this is an entry from the Historical Dictionary of #CôtedIvoire (The #IvoryCoast), 3rd edition, by Cyril K. Daddieh:
"For the most part, relations between #BurkinaFaso and Côte d’Ivoire had been cordial since Upper Volta’s independence leader, Maurice Yaméogo, distanced himself from Kwame Nkrumah of #Ghana and became a follower of Félix Houphouët-Boigny. On the eve of independence, Houphouët-Boigny, with French support, was able to get the Voltaic parliament to rescind its earlier decision to join the #Mali Federation under the leadership of #Senegal. That successful instigation resulted in Upper Volta (Burkina Faso) joining the Conseil de l’Entente, an organization created largely to advance the regional ambitions of Houphouët-Boigny and Côte d’Ivoire.
The relationship between the two countries was structured by the thousands of Mossi (Dyula) immigrant workers in Côte d’Ivoire and by remittance flows back to Burkina Faso, as well as the railway linking Abidjan and Ouagadougou. Both the rail line and the port of Abidjan are essential lifelines for Burkina Faso as they carry the country’s imports and exports.

Here's an article explaining how #france started a civil war in #CôtedIvoire to throw out a president who refused to follow their orders, replacing him with the current stooge Alassane Ouattara.
His protege in #CôtedIvoire, Félix Houphouët-Boigny, is the man who actually coined the term "françafrique"; of course, he meant it positively (as a beneficiary of the policy). Foccart supported opponents of Sékou Touré's #Guinea & backed the #CIA tool Mobutu Sese Seko in #Congo-Kinshasa, where Patrice Lumumba was famously assassinated. In Congo #Brazzaville, which welcomed leftists & marxists from all over Africa, he planted as many french spies as he could to undermine anti-oppressive work. He also supported #Biafra's war to secede from #Nigeria in an attempt to get france access to the oil of the Niger Delta.
Foccart was also a key figure in french domestic politics, running domestic intelligence operations, manipulating elections, & spying on other government officials. While some "progressive" french heads of state officially shunned him, though, they made use of the imperial institutions he'd built & continued his genocidal approach to Africa. Jacques Chirac welcomed him back for a victory lap in the 1990s. Foccart died rich with the institutions he set up pretty much running as intended. A real piece of shit.

“In 2019, US Special Operations forces were deployed in 22 African countries: #Algeria, #Botswana, #BurkinaFaso, #Cameroon, #CapeVerde, #Chad, #CôteDIvoire, #Djibouti, #Egypt, #Ethiopia, #Ghana, #Kenya, #Libya, #Madagascar, #Mali, #Mauritania, #Niger, #Nigeria, #Senegal, #Somalia, #Tanzania and #Tunisia.”
“Formerly secret 2019 AFRICOM planning documents show that there were 29 bases located in 15 different countries or territories, with the highest concentrations in the #Sahel and the #HornOfAfrica.”
Keep in mind this is just where u.s. *troops* were *officially* present, in *one* year.
