ICANN, the organization that #regulates global domain name policy, and #Verisign, the #abusive_monopolist that operates the .COM and .NET #top_level domains, have #QUIETLY proposed #ENORMOUS CHANGES to #GLOBAL_DOMAIN_POLICY in their recently published “Proposed Renewal of the Registry Agreement for .NET”, which is now open for public comment.

Either by design, or unintentionally, they’ve proposed allowing any government in the world to #cancel, #redirect, or #transfer to their #control applicable #domain_names! This is an #outrageous and #dangerous proposal that 🔴 #MUST_BE_STOPPED.

While this proposal is currently only for .NET domain names, presumably they would want to also #apply it to other #extensions like 🔴 .COM as those contracts come up for #renewal.

The 🔴 #OFFENDING TEXT can be found #buried in an #Appendix of the proposed new registry agreement. Using the “#redline” version of the proposed agreement (which is useful for quickly seeing what has changed compared with the current agreement), the critical changes can be found in #Section 2.7 of Appendix 8, on pages 147-148. (the blue text represents new language) Below is a screenshot of that section:

Section 2.7(b)(i) is new and problematic on its own (and I’ll analyze that in more detail in a future blog post – there are other things wrong with this proposed agreement, but I’m starting off with the worst aspect). However, carefully examine the new text in Section 2.7(b)(ii) on page 148 of the redline document.

It would allow Verisign, via the new text in 2.7(b)(ii)(5), to:

” deny, cancel, redirect or transfer any registration or transaction, or place any domain name(s) on registry lock, hold or similar status, as it deems necessary, in its unlimited and sole discretion” [the language at the beginning of 2.7(b)(ii), emphasis added]

Then it lists when it can take the above measures. The first 3 are non-controversial (and already exist, as they’re not in blue text). The 4th is new, relating to security, and might be abused by Verisign. But, look at the 5th item! I was shocked to see this new language:

“(5) to ensure compliance with applicable law, government rules or regulations, or pursuant to any legal order or subpoena of any government, administrative or governmental authority, or court of competent jurisdiction,” [emphasis added]

This text has a plain and simple meaning — they propose to allow “any government“, “any administrative authority” and “any government authority” and “court[s] of competent jurisdiction” to deny, cancel, redirect, or transfer any domain name registration (as I noted above, this is currently proposed for .NET, but if not rejected immediately with extreme prejudice, it could also find its way into other registry agreements like .COM which the abusive monopolist Verisign manages).

You don’t have to be ICANN’s fiercest critic to see that this is arguably the most dangerous language ever inserted into an ICANN agreement.

Customer's plea to cancel #COMCAST_GOES_VIRAL | Ryan Block posted his phone call with Comcast as he tried to #cancel his #service with them, and it has now gone viral.

Comcast #billed me #improperly too. When I went to the local office to ask the reasons for my bill being double the rate, I was told to refer to a commercial about a temporary price of 50% expiring and to GTFO. Except my 50% had already expired before then and now it was 4x the original sign-up rate. So I cancelled and then got a call offering me to join for 50% off with some free cable TV. They said it was some kind of simple error that they made to charge me more, as if the hours of conversation with the rep were not enough time to figure it out. I declined and after I quit and asked the rep if everything on my bill and account was finalized, I was told yes, everything is paid for. Then got bills in the mail several times for ~20$ for.... "Adjustments"--no explanations ever given.

COMMENTS: MY EXPERIENCE AS A FORMER COMCAST EMPLOYEE: #CANCELLING_COMCAST. I used to #work for #them and I was always #instructed NOT to #give any #credit any way possible. I was #taught that #ignoring_requests would lead to customers #giving_up but not all of course. It still resulted in the majority giving up which saved the Roberts family millions. You need to get BRIAN Roberts address and take your issue to him directly. In my experience we were #taught to #deceive the #customer when it came to any #financial #compensation and I can tell you as a Comcast customer I've been through the same #hell I was #trained to put people through. The #best_day of my life was when I was #laid_off although my #wife worked there too and she was laid off so we had to try to reapply within the company. I was told straight out that I had #participated in #union_activity and therefor was #not_renirable.

Well yes I did sign an agreement to vote for the union because employees in my opinion were treated horribly. Threats for performance if in 4.5 minutes you didn't review all services, the bill, resolve the technical issue and most importantly you had to sell service. This was my experience and what standard I was held to and to top that if you didn't sell you were penalized in you pay. Comcast is only out for your money and has no interest in helping you with substandard service that I was told was blamed on the customers infrastructure as a means to save the company money. I was told this by leadership and threatened when I stood up for the customer and that was my experience. You should know as customers. I've also been charged for a high speed internet that I don't get and never will according to the techs who've been to my apartment. The company conceded to me that they would give me a $400.00 credit but would never be able to fix my issue. Of course I took what I could get but thank God Fios is now in my complex because as soon as my fraudulent contract is over I am gone.

Except my 50% had already expired before then and now it was 4x the original sign-up rate. So I cancelled and then got a call offering me to join for 50% off with some free cable TV. They said it was some kind of simple error that they made to charge me more, as if the hours of conversation with the rep were not enough time to figure it out. I declined and after I quit and asked the rep if everything on my bill and account was finalized, I was told yes, everything is paid for. Then got bills in the mail several times for ~20$ for.... "Adjustments"--no explanations ever given.

COMMENTS: MY EXPERIENCE AS A FORMER COMCAST EMPLOYEE: #CANCELLING_COMCAST. I used to #work for #them and I was always #instructed NOT to #give any #credit any way possible. I was #taught that #ignoring_requests would lead to customers #giving_up but not all of course. It still resulted in the majority giving up which saved the Roberts family millions. You need to get BRIAN Roberts address and take your issue to him directly. In my experience we were #taught to #deceive the #customer when it came to any #financial #compensation and I can tell you as a Comcast customer I've been through the same #hell I was #trained to put people through. The #best_day of my life was when I was #laid_off although my #wife worked there too and she was laid off so we had to try to reapply within the company. I was told straight out that I had #participated in #union_activity and therefor was #not_renirable.

Well yes I did sign an agreement to vote for the union because employees in my opinion were treated horribly. Threats for performance if in 4.5 minutes you didn't review all services, the bill, resolve the technical issue and most importantly you had to sell service. This was my experience and what standard I was held to and to top that if you didn't sell you were penalized in you pay. Comcast is only out for your money and has no interest in helping you with substandard service that I was told was blamed on the customers infrastructure as a means to save the company money. I was told this by leadership and threatened when I stood up for the customer and that was my experience. You should know as customers. I've also been charged for a high speed internet that I don't get and never will according to the techs who've been to my apartment. The company conceded to me that they would give me a $400.00 credit but would never be able to fix my issue. Of course I took what I could get but thank God Fios is now in my complex because as soon as my fraudulent contract is over I am gone.

COMMENTS: MY EXPERIENCE AS A FORMER COMCAST EMPLOYEE: #CANCELLING_COMCAST. I used to #work for #them and I was always #instructed NOT to #give any #credit any way possible. I was #taught that #ignoring_requests would lead to customers #giving_up but not all of course. It still resulted in the majority giving up which saved the Roberts family millions. You need to get BRIAN Roberts address and take your issue to him directly. In my experience we were #taught to #deceive the #customer when it came to any #financial #compensation and I can tell you as a Comcast customer I've been through the same #hell I was #trained to put people through. The #best_day of my life was when I was #laid_off although my #wife worked there too and she was laid off so we had to try to reapply within the company. I was told straight out that I had #participated in #union_activity and therefor was #not_renirable.

Well yes I did sign an agreement to vote for the union because employees in my opinion were treated horribly. Threats for performance if in 4.5 minutes you didn't review all services, the bill, resolve the technical issue and most importantly you had to sell service. This was my experience and what standard I was held to and to top that if you didn't sell you were penalized in you pay. Comcast is only out for your money and has no interest in helping you with substandard service that I was told was blamed on the customers infrastructure as a means to save the company money. I was told this by leadership and threatened when I stood up for the customer and that was my experience. You should know as customers. I've also been charged for a high speed internet that I don't get and never will according to the techs who've been to my apartment. The company conceded to me that they would give me a $400.00 credit but would never be able to fix my issue. Of course I took what I could get but thank God Fios is now in my complex because as soon as my fraudulent contract is over I am gone.
