Survived my first "long ride" on the #BMW #CE04 scooter:

- 333 miles to the beach & back

I haven't found anyone on the internet who has done electrical work on this scoot, so there is zero documentation, and I'm a wee bit nervous.

Plans are coming together for a 1000-mile tour of sites important to Native American culture in Western North Carolina in July.

Since my little #BMW #CE04 only has a realistic range of ~65 miles, it's going to take some planning & ingenuity, particularly in the more remote parts of the Appalachian mountains. Also needed: places where I can charge while I eat & sleep.

If anyone has tips for the area, I'm all ears!

I don't know if it's the amazingly low center of gravity, but the #BMW #CE04 is surprisingly easy to ride on gravel roads. I'm impressed!

Thoughts on the #BMW #CE04 after 200mi (300km) & my first rain ride:

- Average range before charging is 68mi riding in the NC Triangle area (best 79mi, worst 63mi). Largely dependent on top speed & weather. Range has not been a concern.

- Slow-speed maneuvering is going to take some getting used t, as there is no clutch.

- Everything has been smooth so far, other than needing to adjust the angle of the low-beam.

- Even in Eco mode, instant torque is fun!

Ran my first errand with the #BMW #CE04 today: a critical burrito run to Cosmic Cantina. It was a ride easily done by bicycle (4.2mi round trip the safe way), but it still felt like freedom nonetheless. The bike also received two random compliments from nearby pedestrians.

I also tried the #Tesla to #J1772 converter (#TeslaTap Mini) for charging - it works beautifully for medium-speed charging!

I've decided to start referring to my #BMW #CE04 as a #motorbike, as the word #Scooter has such a wide & confusing set of definitions in America. Most folks assume I mean an Electric Kick Scooter.

As a former proper motorbike owner, the only difference I can tell between the CE04 and a normal motorcycle is that the wheels are 2" smaller, and that there is an under-seat helmet compartment.

When it's electric, it really doesn't matter.

Thoughts?

Plugging in the scooter after a fun day of taking the girls around on their first motorized 2-wheel rides. They love the torque and the hidden helmet compartment (my #Schuberth C5 L fits!)

Charging over 120V is slower for me than the #BMW #CE04 manual suggests - ~8h instead of ~4h, but perhaps it's the 50ft extension cable I'm using.

It's still good for that magical feeling of waking up to a fuel tank, but it may make some trips more complicated, as I may need to use L2 chargers more often.

I made the 96km (59mi) ride home, so meet Celeste - my new #BMW #CE04

Temps got down to 3'C (37'F), so I had the seat warmer and seat grips at full blast. I could have certainly used real motorcycle pants instead of jeans and maybe even a heated vest.

Being cautious on my first ride, I made two charging stops adding 9% each time. I reached home with 21% so I could have just barely made it home without stops.

Consumption (Eco mode): 7.6KW/kWh per 100km

Est range at this temp: 60-70mi.

With the help of Plugshare and Google Maps, I've planned out a route to bring home the #BMW #CE04 with plenty of charging options. I shouldn't have to charge, but I don't really know what real-world range looks like for me yet (it's 80mi on paper)

It's a shame that the CE04 doesn't support DC Fast Charging, which makes it incompatible with many charging stations. While still a rarity among 2-wheel EVs, I suspect this will be the last generation of e-motorbikes that doesn't include #CCS.

The TL;DR is that if you have an #EV, #ABetterRouteplanner is the bee's knees for long-distance travel planning, taking weather, charging time, elevation changes, weight, and current state-of-charge into account.

They don't yet have a profile for my new EV #scooter which makes it not very useful for trip planning. Your upvotes will help get the #BMW #CE04 on their radar!

Thinking about this looong boy kept me up last night.

I still prefer active transit, but everything here is so spread apart that I constantly find myself places that are a 4hr round-trip by bicycle.

The range on the #BMW #CE04 is a modest 80mi, but after reviewing the maps, I realized that I never venture that far alone, so I can still use the family car for those trips.

If I'm up for an adventure, I can still use electric chargers on the go, but with a lengthy 45min charge time (20->80%).
