A fantastic outcome from #CITESCoP19 on proposals regarding the addition of species new to #CITES appendices I & II, with all but 1 proposal succeeding. Legal #wildlifetrade in newly listed species must be recorded and globally regulated, with measures that, when enforced, ensure trade is both legal and sustainable.
The challenge now is the successful implementation of effective and inclusive management strategies. I've listed below the new species groups that were adopted at the conference.

⏰ An early start to the day for a festive get together with the Communications INC team in London. So much to wrap up and celebrate as the #OceanSuperYear 🌊 comes to an end, hopefully with good news for 🦈 and #BlueNature 🐠 from #CITESCOP19 and CBD #COP15, and exciting plans for 2023.

Highly critical OpEd from @martinhojsik on #EU decision-making at #CITESCoP19 in Panama. Definitely worth a read if you’re interest in protection of vulnerable, threatened & endangered species. #wildlife #biodiversity #wildlifetrade #hippos

Woke up to some good news from colleagues at #CITESCoP19 in Panama.
Despite continued & shameful opposition from #EU, which is a key destination for glass #frogs for exotic pet trade, a majority of Parties voted to list the whole genus on #CITES App II to give these weird & wonderful #amphibians greater protection from international #trade. 🐸🐸🐸#biodiversity #wildlifetrade #conservation #animals

Trade in wild animals and plants crosses borders. We need int’l cooperation to safeguard species from over-exploitation. @CITES@twitter.com helps protect 38k+ species of animals and plants traded around the world. TY to all who joined at #CITESCoP19 this week!

The Pygmy bluetongue lizard has passed #CITESCoP19 committee - to be added to CITES with the highest international #wildlifetrade protections. If confirmed later this week in plenary, this will be the first new Australian endemic species addition to CITES App I & II in over 3 decades!

Good news for saving #biodiversity - we need much more of this! #CITES
RT @ElephantsFuture: Good news #CITESCoP19 : no new #ivory trade as proposed! ▶️Another relief: a most critical initiative trying to change the #CITES listing criteria was defeated. Scientific conservation criteria remain key instead of economic interests. #savebiodiversity

Honored to be included in the AZA delegation attending
@CITES, an international agreement between governments to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten the survival of the species. #CITESCoP19 #CoP19 https://twitter.com/zoos_aquariums/status/1595087640281452545

Wildlife trade and zoonotic disease has been a topic under discussion at #CITESCoP19 🐒🦇🐯
Our recent retrospective study with @JNCC_UK@twitter.com scoped the potential for major @WHO@twitter.com-listed diseases to be found in traded animals 👇 https://bit.ly/3AqVK4x
The proposal to list the Chinese water dragon (Physignathus cocincinus) in Appendix II has just passed committee at #CITES #CITESCop19 It is under ongoing high trade pressure, our recent study showed that this species is the most frequently traded live, wild-caught reptile imported to the US, with >575,000 animals imported in a decade.
Let’s hope the #CITES decision encourages effective population management practices to ensure future trade is sustainable and regulated

A promising outcome for international fisheries regulation last week at #CITESCoP19 with all 4 marine proposals regarding the addition of new species to the appendices passing committee. Including requiem & hammerhead sharks, guitarfish and sea cucumbers (genus Thelenota). If confirmed in #CITES plenary this week, the percentage of shark fin trade regulated by CITES will increase from 25% to 70% of species. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/nov/18/shark-fin-trade-regulation-cites-panama
A Cambodian government official in transit to #CITESCOP19 arrested in NYC for transborder smuggling of endangered long tailed #macaques This article unpacks how 2,634 wild macaques were caught and laundered as captive bred animals netting $9.3 million for the cartel https://www.rfa.org/english/news/cambodia/monkeys-11172022132419.html
A big win for sharks at #CITESCoP19 https://bit.ly/3GrX7E2 "Deeply unsustainable shark fin trade will finally be fully regulated," says @WCSsharks let’s see if the uplisting of hammerheads and requiem sharks can be matched with effective enforcement and fisheries management
i do not know what world leaders do not comprehend at this point in the #ClimateCrisis. #COP27 was another failure amid so many previous opportunities to put an expiration date on fossil fuels. it is encouraging that #LossAndDamageFinance made it into the text, but it’s only a bandaid (and i am skeptical that it will be fully funded).
i do not think we can expect anything more from world leaders until corporations are banned from co-opting these events, fossil fuel lobbyists are explicitly prohibited from attending, and decision makers in developed countries finally understand that their money will not save them from a climate breakdown.
i hope #CITESCoP19 and #CBDCOP15 can achieve some measure of progress but i am short on optimism.

Important that #CITESCoP19 tackle zoonotic-origin pathogens but let us not forget the legal, non-regulated trade in wildlife constitutes an orders-of-magnitude larger hazard. Let us make sure this does not become another siloed working group #OneHealth
Around 100 shark species are expected to have enhanced protection with final decision next week at #CITESCoP19. "It's a game changer," says @WCSsharks https://inews.co.uk/news/environment/sharks-threatened-increased-protection-game-changing-vote-cop19-1981955
