Musically speaking, there’s so much that feels essential about .

What does it for you?

For me, hearing the Christmas is essential in these last few days running up to Christmas itself. That first allegro (1’27 on this recording) almost defines the start of Christmas itself (as opposed to Advent and the long musical run-in of concerts and carol services.)

This week in my final class of the year we listened to ’s A minor .

There’s obviously no explicit Christmas link and yet it somehow felt perfect.

The joy and energy of the outer movements and the poignant simplicity of the middle movement never grow old for me.
