To cheer myself up later I am going to watch the final of the 2020 series of The Great British Bake Off.

I thoroughly enjoy watching that series, I’ve learned new techniques as I’ve watched. Although there are things I would never try to make (the jelly cake challenge? Well, maybe one day), and although my entire kitchen space is smaller than one of the competitor’s benches in the Bake Off Tent, I’m a fairly confident baker, and I’d love to tackle some of the technical challenges.

I’m good at pastry. (Having lousy peripheral circulation has to be good for something - cold hands make for good pastry!) And I’m pretty good at most cakes. I’d like to learn more about decorating and patisserie.

Luckily partner doesn’t mind eating my practice bakes!

There are small-space #woodworking options - pen-making, miniatures (e.g. for doll-houses or dioramas), and manufacturers who specialise in small tools for small woodworking (Proxon comes to mind). Hower, the chips, shavings, and sanding dust from woodworking do travel to every corner of all available space 😭

#sewing - by the time you buy fabrics, sewing machine feet, various threads, fabrics, scissors, fabrics, notions, fabrics, rotary cutters, fabrics, and cutting mats, you will need an entire separate flat to house your hobby. 😜
(I'm joking, and I'm sure there is a theoretical sewist out there who will disagree with this)

Seriousy, sewing is a good option, and can be practical, and also very creative.

What about #cooking? That's a pretty wide field - there may be something that fits.

#CakeDecorating? it has the bonus that the creation is eaten, so doesn't take up space in a small flat

#Gardening? There are small-space options, and you can grow edible plants.

Since I did technically promise photos of cake, here's the Hobbit house birthday cake we made together for my birthday this year!

Lemon cake, lemon cream cheese buttercream (yes, I like lemon), white chocolate ganache...I actually just ate the very last slice of this from the freezer last week and now writing this out I HUNGER FOR MORE 😭
