Ecologists: This seems like a simple question, but of the numerous retailers that I’ve asked, the yes / no response is 50% each way. So throw in your 2 bobs worth: “will a wi-fi enabled trail / surveillance camera connect to a wi-fi router?”

I live in town, two blocks from Main Street and a block from the County Courthouse, but also a block from the Missouri River. In addition to a constant parade of neighborhood cats and dogs, and endless squirrels, over the years my backyard has seen: raccoons, opossum, deer, coyotes, foxes, turkeys, armadillo, groundhogs, rabbits, and probably more I"m forgetting about. Some of these I had no idea were in the neighborhood.

Picked up this pair of plains zebra foraging among the prickly pear on one of our

The plains zebra has much thicker stripes than the Grevy's zebra, which we also see. Another ID tip is that plains zebra have stripes on their belly, while Grevy's have a white belly.

The plains zebra is not as as the Grevy's zebra, but is still listed as by the

When working with thousands of photos, you need to be able to process these images automatically.

If you're on , batch files are a powerful tool for tasks including:

- Copying a list of images from one place to another

- Adding a common prefix (e.g., a site ID) to images

- Removing part of images' filename

You can find a how-to guide for accomplishing these tasks on my website:

We were lucky enough to spot this extremely rare black on one of our deployed at Conservancy.

This leopard is the same species as the more common variety (light fur with dark spots) - its colouration is due to a rare mutation, which is much more common among leopards in moist forest regions (see doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0 for more info).

I guess this is a tiny bit better than smashing or stealing the camera..... but why?!?!?!?!?! STOP DESTROYING OR MESSING WITH MY DATA COLLECTION 😤 I am trying to help you have a forest with in it. This season we have had more missing cameras and camera vandalism than ever before.

Getting some good observations on the , like this here.

Elephants are thought to be one of the key dispersers of Opuntia seeds in the region - in heavily-invaded areas it's common to see piles of elephant dung which are stained purple by the fruit!

This image is from a new batch which will be making its way to on soon.

Look at this gorgeous striped !

Striped hyenas are more elusive than the (which we also see on our ) and live in much smaller groups (they were previously thought to be solitary). They are caring parents - both females and males look after their pups until they are two years old, when they are old enough to fend for themselves.

Even though our setup isn't really optimised for sampling (as our main focus is on ) we've still caught nearly 60 bird species on the cameras, including this pair of Von der Decken's hornbills (Tockus deckeni).

Caught this on one of the . It's pretty unusual to see one out and about in daylight (usually they spend the day in the river and come out at night to feed), but as this was a relatively cool morning it didn't have to worry about overheating!
