#GreatAlbums1990s – #Skydiggers - #Reckless (1992). This Toronto combo turned a country-rock fixation (especially Gram Parsons) into a series of low-key albums heard mostly across Canada during the 90s. Andy Maize’s dusty vocals and the band’s whirlpool harmonies recall the likes of CSN(Y), with a touch of college-rock quirkiness comparable to early REM. The starkly beautiful “A Penny More” and “Don’t Blame it On Me” are centrepieces of this enduring set.

#GreatAlbums1990s – #Sloan - #TwiceRemoved (1994). This Halifax, NS quartet was briefly poised as Next Big Thing by Geffen in the wake of Nirvana’s success. On this sophomore release, the band shed grunge for the power pop that is their more natural métier. Glistening with tight harmonies, instant hooks and jangling guitars – “People of the Sky” cops shamelessly from Rubber Soul – the album placed Sloan in the same sugar shack as Big Star and Teenage Fanclub. #1990s, #Rock, #PowerPop, #Canadiana

#GreatAlbums1990s - #LeonardCohen - #TheFuture (1992). LC waxed political and prophetic on tracks like "The Future," "Democracy" and "Closing Time," reflecting on the fall of the Berlin Wall and the LA riots with equally ominous candor. The lovely "Anthem" preserves the Canadian icon's romantic side, while the music here rocks (or at least "rocks") better than the pallid synthpop framing his songs back in the 80s.

#GreatAlbums1990s - #NeilYoung & #CrazyHorse - #RaggedGlory (1990). Neil's return to form in the 90s began loud 'n proud with this set of saturated raveups as grungy as anything out of Seattle. For all the noise, it was the hookiness of "Over and Over," "Mansion on the Hill" and the bitterly funny "Fuckin' Up" that made these songs minor classics in Neil's gloriously gargantuan canon. The live versions on Arc/ Weld took things even further.

#GreatAlbums1990s - #TheTragicallyHip – #FullyCompletely (1992). Mordecai Richler’s phrase, “world famous in Canada,” never applied more aptly to a band than the Hip – stadium legends at home, struggling cultists abroad. Their third full-length set included “Courage,” “Fifty Mission Cap” and “Wheat Kings,” which, like the Band or early Guess Who, found universal value in tales of localized tragedy and triumph. Their most consistent album.

@ottaross the orange one, 2nd from the left, smells like Amaretto and tastes like "Freshie" . Nod to childhood #Canadiana
@hoydenhere The generation before him thought that Canadian history was either unimportant or non-existent. He churned out pop-history Canadiana before blogs and vlogs were a thing.
I'm Gen X and I can just remember him appearing as a regular on the CBC game show Front Page Challenge when I was small.
I guess we're full circle now, and he needs his own Heritage Moment.

@beanface42 Re : Cohen. Une performance grandiose, quoique plus #Canadiana qu'Americana, puisque LC était de Montréal. 😉
