One of my favorite moments involving Desktop #Linux advocacy on #OSNews was when #Canonical decided to end support for 32 bit Apps in #Ubuntu including Games & WINE, and one of the commenters sincerely believed that that was "Innovation".

Canonical’s Loses Prominent LXD Engineer
Stéphane Graber has announced their resignation from Canonical after 12 years of working at the company, mostly on LXD. The decision follows news last week that Canonical has taken the LXD project in-house after years of it existing as a community endeavour under the Linux Containers (LXC) umbrella. Stéphane’s engineering expertise and enthusiasm for LXD (and containers in general) has arguably made them the “face” of LXD. In social media replies to their (somewhat unexpected) decision, many have commented on this and thanked them for their contributions and help over the years. Clearly this is a major loss for Canonical :sys_more_orange:

You know, IDGAF if developers at #Canonical are "working" on the speed and instability problems that #Snap has, they shouldn't exist in the first place before they're forced on #Ubuntu end users.
Needless to say, Canonical will never be a rival to Red Hat or SUSE because Mark Shuttleworth remains its worst enemy.

Snapcraft Website Given a ‘More Modern Look’
Next time you stop by the Snapcraft website you’ll notice it has a fresh new look. Canonical unveiled the changes today saying it “embarked on a project to redesign snapcraft.io and give it a more modern look”. This ‘more modern look’ is now live on the web for everybody, including you, to go gawk at. If you follow @omgubuntu on Twitter you’ll may have seen a tweet earlier the week in which I expressed slight surprise™ at the new logo. What previously said “Snapcraft” now says “Canonical Snapcraft” – which in light of those “proprietary backend” claims levelled against the format perhaps :sys_more_orange:

I'm looking forward to the debate about #Canonical #snap packet system facing IBMs RHEL disaster. While snap is numerical the most adopted sandboxed packaging format, it was widely criticized for its closed source server backend. #Flatpak being RedHat technology, snaps are getting a lot more sexy lately.
Ubuntu Wants to Switch CUPS Printing Stack to Snap
Ubuntu 23.10 is aiming to ship the CUPS printing stack as a snap package. Canonical’s Till Kamppeter, who is also the project lead for the OpenPrinting Project, says he wants to “…switch Ubuntu 23.10, the Mantic Minotaur, as planned, to use the CUPS Snap as its printing system and the Printer Application Snaps as drivers for non-IPP-driverless printers.” Printers are not my forte; I last owned a printer about a decade ago and even then it hadn’t been used for years — not quite a daisy wheel, but getting there 😉! I recall lots of printer driver issues on Ubuntu, :sys_more_orange:

#ubuntu 23.04 ist ein gutes Release!
#canonical hat in den letzten 2-3 Jahren extrem viel richtig gemacht.
Das ich meine Produktivsysteme seit einiger Zeit von #fedora zu #ubuntu gewechselt habe bereue ich nach wie vor nicht.
Canonical Bringing Livepatch Support to HWE Kernels
Ubuntu Pro subscribers will be able to apply reboot-free updates to more Linux kernels from July. As spotted by our friends at Neowin, Canonical announced Livepatch support for Hardware Enablement (HWE) kernels starting this summer. The first HWE kernel being covered as part of this support extension is Linux 6.2, which will be backported from the Ubuntu 23.04 release and pushed out to users of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Livepatch is a feature only available on long-term support (LTS) versions of Ubuntu for users with an active Ubuntu Pro subscription. When enabled, Livepatch allows users to install kernel updates (on eligible :sys_more_orange:

Nächster logische Schritt für #Canonical bzgl. #flatpak Support in #Ubuntu:
Es wird einfach gestrichen im Repositiory.
Bei #Firefox und #Chromium wird schon bei apt ungefragt das #Snap untergeschoben. Es ist nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis mit einer Marketingplattitüde flatpak abgesägt wird. Ich wette auf Ubuntu 24.10 als erste Version ohne Flatpak.

@mks_h @thelinuxEXP I don't think this is a political move, this strikes me entirely as business.
Last I paid attention, the client software (e.g. snapd) is #FOSS, but is hardcoded to use Canonical's servers for obtaining snap packages. The source for the servers is not available, and distributing via snap requires submitting to the CLA.
Pure conjecture on my part, but this smells like an attempt to stave off a rival so #Canonical can setup a walled / proprietary application eco-system.
@thelinuxEXP Does this surprise anyone, given permanently removing snaps ended up being kinda convoluted?
This feels overbearing and anti-community, but distros that chose to be an #ubuntu flavor agree to a process that could be modified at any moment by #Canonical.
Derivative distros like Mint, Neon, and Elementary don't have to follow suite.
On the flip side, interesting to see Canonical double down on their own technology instead of just droping it.
Is there a reason not to enable Ubuntu pro for private users? To 5 computers it's free of charge.
