More served under Henry VIII as the Lord High Chancellor of England 1529-1532, but opposed the Protestant Reformation and Henry VIII's role as 'supreme head of the Church of England'. Ultimately, More was convicted of treason and executed in July 1535.

So what about More's canonisation? In 1886, Pope Leo XIII beatified More (the first step to being sainted), and Pope Pius XI canonised him in 1935. But he remains a controversial figure.
