A reached out to the nearby music school 2 years ago to start my daughter on lessons. I had never expected the young teacher we got assigned would speak #Cantonese but fate would have it and I asked if she could speak it. She was THRILLED to teach in her own tongue and my daughter was her first student in Cantonese. She only teaches a day a week and is in demand so I switched my daughter to another teacher and gave the spot to my son who needs more language help.
I'm sitting outside listening and wow. Just wow. Part of language learning really is finding opportunities to expose them to it in different contexts. I'm feeling really fortunate we have this.
It's happening here too. We have a really great group of parents dedicated to #Cantonese and there are online parent groups dedicated to translating books to Canto.
We will fight the imperialism as long as we can.
Fight the good fight my friend.

You know, I think it's great that newer immigrants have introduce many new and different regional cuisines from China to the U.S., but man, I miss old school #Cantonese cooking. I grew up on that. All the first wave of #Chinese immigrants came from that region and these restaurants (from what I've seen) are dying out.
Big milestone in my #Cantonese lesson with Grace today! Very chuffed! 👇 #LanguageLearning
My first complex sentence was about my tastes in tea - an important topic!

Apparently, in the latest #Signal update, the #Cantonese and #Uyghur UIs have disappeared.

The #Cantonese says 冬至大過年 winter #solstice is larger (i.e. more important) than New Years. My family has never celebrated Winter Solstice (or Summer Solstice since my family migrated to the other side) much. (But I noticed that my mother has a piece of paper stuck at the bottom of the calendar stating the date of winter solstice each year.)

One day I will be sorely tempted to make use of that 'change language' button to post in #Chinese and write exclusively in colloquial #Cantonese
The great #historian of the #Chinese #MiddleAges #Tang #唐, Chen Yinke (or -que) #陳寅恪 (1890-1969), spent the last 20 years of his life in #Guangzhou #廣州. Chen, who had lost his eyesight during #middleage, used to take walks on this walkway in shining white concrete leading to his house, as he was still able to distinguish light and dark under the bright #Cantonese sun. I took these photos when I was studying Chinese and #philosophy at Sun Yat-sen University #中山大學 in Guangzhou from 2005 to 2007.

As a native german speaker, it seems easier for me to sing along with music in mandarin or cantonese than with russian music. Probably because mandarin and cantonese have a lot of sounds that are also common in german whereas russian has more sounds that aren't used in german.
