“...I saw it clearly. The tragedy of our time is to have lost the ability to feel loss, the inability of power to rise to its responsibility for human decency....I was thinking that if what distinguishes us as humans is our stupidity, what may redeem us is our grace'.”
― Earl Lovelace, an award-winning Trinidadian author, playwright, & short-story writer, was born on July 13, 1935

what is it about #Martinique? I have just counted that I have read six writers from there. Césaire, Fanon, Glissant, Chamoiseau (who is amazing, I want to read more) and Malcom Ferdinand. Who have I missed, and when will I get around to reading a single author from Guadeloupe? #CaribbeanLiterature

The Atlantic hurricane season officially starts tomorrow. I still remember how Hurricane Gilbert squatted over Jamaica for three nightmarish days before leaving.
Olive Senior's "Hurricane Story, 1988" connects the other hurricane stories in the "Travellers' Tales" section of her poetry collection, Gardening in the Tropics, which is an absolute must-read.

Wearing my professional hat:
sx salon (an open-access platform for Caribbean creative and other writing) welcomes submissions for upcoming issue on Francophone Caribbean literature, broadly construed. We're particularly interested in work on and by lesser-known writers and from less-often-represented sites (such as St Martin and French Guiana) and in work that goes beyond the familiar in content, theme and style.

Literary legend Dr. Erna Brodber—a Jamaican author, community activist, cultural historian, & sociologist—was born on this day in 1940. Her body of work, which celebrates the folk cultures of the African Diaspora, has been studied in universities around the world. Her sister is Velma Pollard, another acclaimed Jamaican author.

Andrea Brady, wise poet and critic, recommended #Chamoiseau in such a way that I realised I should read him. This book, 1997, is astonishing (in dialogue with #Glissant), and the translation by Linda Coverdale, 2018 (booksellers: New Press NY/Dialogue Books UK) is a feat. #VendrediLecture #bookstodon #CaribbeanLiterature #francophonie
