Johnny cakes (fried dumplings) were originally called 'Journey cakes' because they were packed as lunches or snacks to sustain enslaved Africans in Jamaica on their long journeys. Now, they're a traditional Jamaican breakfast side dish.

A good exercise this #BlackHistoryMonth is to try and find connections in #BlackHistory in the US and Abroad.
Despite some of the Diaspora Wars we witness, Black Americans are important to anti-colonial movements in the Caribbean and countries we've immigrate like Canada, France, and the UK.

Some people have an interest in learning about other Black folks across the Diaspora, but don't know where to start.
If you are looking to expand your knowledge of #BlackHistory to beyond the countries you live, #BlackWomenRadicals
is a great source of jumping off points.

Coolies: How Britain Re-Invented Slavery
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Cncg3yhWPI
A lot of different communities have experienced indentured servitude, but how it looked really depended on where you were from, and where you ended up. In some places, conditions were similar to slavery, in other places that comparison would be inappropriate.

Imake a conscious effort to learn about groups I am not a part of. I don't think it's right to say you care about a group while knowing nothing about their histories.
In the Caribbean, people who are from all over. Those of us with ancestors forced over from Africa, Indentured servants brought over from India, people from the region since time immemorial.
A group that doesn't get much attention are Chinese-Caribbean:

Asquith Xavier (1920-1980)
Born in Dominica ๐ฉ๐ฒ and moved to the UK after WW2. He was denied a job as a train guard at a station due to the colour bar. The Race Relations Act of 1965 did not apply to the workplace. With community support, he got the job. In 1968 the Race Relations Act was extended to housing, employment, and public services.

Two pieces of work are in my consideration must-reads.
A discourse on Colonialism. Which is extremely effective at describing what Colonialism is and the dehumanization that comes with it.
The second is Notebook of a Return to a Native Land mentioned in the article.

This magisterial survey of the historical geography of the West Indies is at bottom concerned with the causes and consequences of three complex and inter-related phenomena: the rapid and total removal of a large aboriginal population; the development of plantation agriculture and the arrival of enforced labour, in the form of many thousands of African slaves; and the environmental, ecological and cultural changes that resulted.

Sugar Cane Alley, written and directed by Euzhan Palcy takes place in the 1930s, and is a very good depiction of the stories our parents and grandparents told us about life after slavery.
Whether it was cane, coconut, banana, pineapple, etc pay attention to the dynamics in the film.
