Last weekend was the famous Notting Hill Carnival, in London.
I wasn't there this year, but I was there in 1976, when I took this photo.
The carnival first became a major festival event in 1975, but from 1976 (and for several years afterwards) was beset by spontaneous rioting. This gave going along to it a slightly edgy vibe, although everyone I met seemed to be having a friendly and cheerful time.

When I think of Carnival, I remember Byron Lee and the Dragonaires, a Jamaican ska, calypso, and soca band, who staged the first official festival in Jamaica on this day in 1990.

For this reason king's death was tried to be kept a secret. During some festivals, I think especially the ones during rites of passage, the incest taboo was also broken. Caillois writes here about various sexual excesses during festivals, what reminds me of Bataille's "Tears of Eros".
