@cshentrup @robgalanakis I'm just pointing out a handy number for scale, that the city with streetcars running out Belmont and Hawthorne and Barbur and so forth had at one point been building towards before the whole #CarsRuinCities thing.

As you might have heard, Ms Nearly-10 is on her own bike next to me and we're doing about 10mph, which is clearly too fast to do safely on the narrow sidewalk on the wrong side of the street (which is the only other option here besides riding on the sharrows.) This isn't an enforcement problem, it's bad Engineering that ruins our cities' livability and our kids' independence (though I'm happy to get better video and take a cut of the tickets whenever you're ready for that.) #CarsRuinCities

@jasonkotenko It's especially insidious since we never see a bill for most of the cost of driving. That cost is paid automatically and silently with taxpayer money, higher housing costs, opportunity costs of sprawl, etc.

Going from Utrecht to Hamburg was a sensory shock. The car noise from the main road outside Hamburg Hbf was deafening at times. You simply don’t hear that level of noise in Dutch cities. #CarsRuinCities

@mgorny Great idea -- It's about time government stopped grossly subsidizing driving while starving active mobility & public transit.

A 2022 study of the lifetime cost of driving a car found that society has to subsidize over 40% of the cost. This amounts to hundreds of thousand of dollars in subsidies for EACH driver. The study was based on German society, so the no doubt the figures would be even worse for the USA.

Traffic planners who don't understand bicycles should not be employed by my city. #Portland is full of #15minuteNeighborhoods by bike (probably every single one by #eBikes), but you currently have to elbow your way through five-lane #stroads to reach those destinations. I live in a neighborhood where you can get around the entire city on a bike without owning a car at all AND almost every house has a driveway and a garage. Somehow both sides of every street in my neighborhood is still lined with parked cars and there’s no room for dedicated bike lanes, apparently.

How did on-street car storage in a neighborhood full of houses with driveways take precedence over a safe lane of travel for bikes? Makes no sense.
