This kind of analysis has been done for the US ISO/RTO regions before, but this is the first publicly available analysis of non-ISO/RTO regions like the Southeast and West. The data illuminates massive opportunities for reduced reliance on coal and increased customer savings over time. A lot of the ongoing plant capital expenses and non-fuel O&M costs come from FERC Form 1 data liberated by #CatalystCoop #PUDL
The Open Grid Emissions Initiative, which uses #CatalystCoop #PUDL data as one of its main inputs, is trying to do this for historical analyses. Even if it's never useful for dispatching demand, it'll be hugely valuable for modeling the feasibility of 24/7 renewables.
I have no idea how this compares to a normal hiring process, but we've been doing membership at #CatalystCoop for the last 3 months:
* We had 35 applicants
* Overall we spent 233 hours preparing for and evaluating them, costing us $9,262 internally.
* Of those 35, there were 3 that completed the process, who we would have been willing to invite into the co-op, but we only needed 2 people.
* Our top 2 candidates accepted our invites, maintaining our all-time offer acceptance rate of 100%.
I think we are going to add two member candidates at #CatalystCoop next month, and then try and then by the middle of next year be looking for a dedicated admin/ops/business person.
For the first time it feels like we are maybe going to try and get ahead of the work and grow intentionally rather than playing catch up and feeling overwhelmed. Which feels risky. And exciting? Like maybe we're going to re-invest in the co-op for the first time.
Is 🤓 this 🫴 capitalism 🦋 ?
@leahstokes As part of #CatalystCoop I take poorly curated public #energy system data from agencies like FERC, EIA, & EPA, integrate them with each other, and distribute them for free as #OpenData ready for analytical use by #climate & #EnergyTransition advocates.

Apropos @brendanp question earlier, here's a client dashboard we've built highlighting county-level existing/proposed #RenewableEnergy deployments, #EnvironmentalJustice priority status, and whether there are anti-renewables laws in each county. Cc: @amywestervelt

#CatalystCoop @ZaneSelvans, any interest in getting into car data? NHTSA posts its downloadable database with lots of car specs as a SQL backup file. V annoying.
#CatalystCoop has started migrating our internal #coop handbook out of Google Docs and into public view so other worker / tech co-ops can see how we do things, and so potential members can understand more about how we're organized and how that's different from a typical company. Would love feedback from other co-op folks if you have it! Markdown source is in GitHub, published with Sphinx to ReadTheDocs for now:
