Yesterday I got to hang out with my 90 year old godmother for the first time in 3 years.

Margaret is a remarkable woman who became radicalized in her late 40's, and moved out of the suburbs into the Catholic Worker house in DC when her youngest went off to college.

She now lives in a retirement community - with a map of US nuclear facilities taped to the back of her front door.

Today In Labor History May 1, 1933: The first issue of the Catholic Worker was published. Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin, who were anarchist-Catholics, founded The Catholic Worker in New York City. The first run of the paper, they published 2,500 copies. By 1936, circulation was 150,000.

Years ago I was on a Holy Week retreat with Catholic Workers with Fr. Dan Berrigan SJ. He and I were walking through the woods together. At the time he was working in an AIDS hospice in NYC and I was a volunteer at Whitman Walker here in DC. Death was everywhere.

And he said this thing to me: "If the Resurrection means anything, it's this: life has an edge over death. May be just an edge - but an edge, nevertheless."

I've never forgotten that.

@DulcimerLuthier I was drying dishes once after serving lunch at a #CatholicWorker house. One of our guests went on & on about oneness with god, repeatedly asking "How do you get oneness with God?" I answered, in all sincerity, "You start by drying the dishes."

Dorothy Day's birthday today. (11/8/1897 - 11/29/1980). Founder of the Catholic Worker, this was the woman who radicalized me.
