Every once in a while I mess up, and end up consuming gluten via cross contamination. And while it definitely sucks, in a weird way it's a nice affirmation that the rest of the time I'm doing things right. (Since you know, I'm otherwise *not* going through this shit.)

Took a bit of a social media break to process my new diagnoses without venting into the void. And I feel like I'm in a good place where I can accept my new reality easier.
I still have more medical tests and things to hopefully rule out as wrong with me but I feel like the news most impactful to my life has already arrived: and

I have some more grieving to do because life is going to look very different than I thought it would, and I'm sure that going will be frustrating and alienating for some time yet. But I am also very hopeful. That my broken bones will finally heal and I will feel much better after some time. I am so grateful for food options, for growing awareness, and to have words for what's been happening to me.

Products must list the presence of wheat, as wheat allergies are on the list of 'this allergen must be declared', which is helpful, but gluten is also in barley, rye, and handful of other things.

This also does not address the issue of cross-contact. In , the majority of us will have a reaction to anything above 20 parts per million of gluten (which is a very small amount).

But Lucas, you might say, what about 'gluten-free' labeling? Surely that's for people like you? And yes, that is helpful.

However: it is not required, it is voluntary. Meaning there are probably many products out there that would be safe for me to eat (which would expand my options which would likely also making groceries less expensive for me and others w/ )

Late last week I was told that my blood test came back positive for . I was suspicious that something was wrong with my digestive system because of and being discussed (waiting on tests to confirm) but I never felt wheat intolerance in my guts like I feel lactose intolerance so it really blindsided me to hear the news.

I'm on an emotional roller-coaster. After years of disordered eating and really putting my behind me after a decade of recovery and learning to eat intuitively and trust and nourish my body.... here I am. I'm not sure how I proceed from here. It's hard not to feel hopeless when I just conquered . I feel like I'm having a new eating disorder pushed onto me and I will have no choice but to comb food labels in fear and refuse for the rest of my life.

I have an endoscopy next month so I'm still supposed to eat but I feel like the freedom to enjoy my life is on a countdown timer. This just feels so bleak. It's not what I wanted for my future. The bad news just keeps coming.

Today's random science fact:

The human intestines are widely known to be the longest organ in the body. It's broken down into both the small and large intestines, part of the larger gastrointestinal tract.

But, how big is it?

The large intestine (our internal camel pack) is a whopping 5-6ft long and at 3in in diameter. It uses its size to store and absorb water from the things we ingest. Otherwise, we would all have diarrhea constantly...

The small but mighty intestine is the true powerhouse. It is a crazy 16-21ft long, and at 1in diameter does 90% of the absorption of nutrients through its membrane.

*Bonus fact

One issue with the small intestine that affects people is celiac disease. It is a gluten allergy that causes the organ to not function properly, inducing pain and swelling, leading to the inability to absorb nutrients.

Just wanted to share a blog I found that has amazing recipes. I don't have any allergies or food aversions, but this blog specifically caters to those that have . Since my family can consume gluten I can substitute gluten products if need be. I've made both versions in the past and they were always AMAZING. If you need a special diet, I highly recommend Iowagirleats.com

May is Celiac Awareness Month. I'm not a doctor, but, as someone suffering from the condition, I'd be happy to answer any questions that you may have.
