Paul Cézanne, Cliffs in L'Estaque, 1882
Cézanne experimentened with the perspective colours and the composition. Through his art he cerated a bridge between impresionists and future movements such as cubism.
Paul Cézanne, The Negro Scipion, 1867
Cézanne pointed to the past as well as to the future of art history. Cézanne, who saw in Delacroix a master and studied painting making copies of his canvases, knew how to perceive modernist qualities in it. Cézanne wanted to raise the impressionists’ principles, based on the vibration of color and light, to the level of classical art. But he went beyond this and painted objects from different points of view, anticipating the cubist precepts.
Paul Cézanne, The Murder, 1868
It was painted when Cézanne was still under the influence of Old Masters such as Gericault (1791-1824) and Velazquez (1599-1660). Cézanne's choice of this brutal subject may have been inspired by Emile Zola's (1840-1902) novel 'Thérèse Racquin' in which the heroine murders her husband. The painting's similarity with illustrations in the popular press suggests that they too could have been a source of inspiration.

Paul Cézanne, Banks of the Marne, 1988
Around 1888 when Cézanne painted Banks of the Marne, he also worked on a number of other water paintings, experimenting with different ways of representing, different ways of bringing his canvases together. Bridge over the Marne at Créteil, with its view looking down the river, features geometric curves and larger blocks of colour as trees, reflected in the water with vertical rather than horizontal brushwork.

Paul Cézanne, Turning Road at Montgeroult, 1898
Each of these zones are largely defined by color. Having rejected clear linear or atmospheric perspective as a means of constructing recessionary illusion, Cézanne relies on the clues afforded by scale, overlapping, and color.

The art of Cezanne had a great influence on cubism. You could say it was the germinal element in Cubism.

A copy of Cezanne's "Still Life with Fruit, Carafe, Sugar Bowl, and Bottle" that I made in the summer of 2021.
I learned so much about how to let the white of the paper do the heavy lifting of a painting here.
Also, Cezanne made adding multiple light layers of different colors look easy. But...it's not, and this is a skill I plan on working on in the future.

Paul Cézanne, Mont Sainte-Victoire, 1902–04
It can be difficult to estimate, by eye, just how far away a mountain lies. A peak can dominate a landscape and command our attention, filling our eyes and mind. Yet it can come as something of a shock to discover that such a prominent natural feature can still be a long distance from us.
Cézanne would return to the motif of Mont Sainte-Victoire throughout the rest of his career.

A Cincinnati Art Museum conservator has discovered what could be a self-portrait by a young Paul Cézanne beneath a still life painted when the artist was about 26 years old.

Cézanne spent the summer of 1888 working in and around Chantilly and this is one of three similar oil paintings of the forest surrounding the chateau there. In all these paintings, Cézanne focused on the avenue through the forest rather than the château which remains largely undefined. He created an effect of depth by building up the landscape as a mosaic of carefully organised coloured patches.
