Transplant Board: U.S. Should Screen At-Risk Organ Donors for Chagas

Last week, ProPublica reported on the death of Bob Naedele, who passed after he received an infected heart; his death could have been prevented if the donor had been tested for Chagas.

The policy change comes after years of recommendations from experts for screening to prevent such deaths.

Açaí berries, a popular so-called #superfood, have been linked to a recent outbreak of #Chagas disease in Brazil. Chagas disease is a parasitic infection transmitted through the feces of triatomine insects ("kissing bugs"). If untreated, Chagas may lead to congestive heart failure and megaesophagus. Past outbreaks have led to a recommendation that #açaí juice should be pasteurized.
