January 28, 1986:
I was in 4th grade. It was a special day as a teacher, Christa McAuliffe, was going up on the Space Shuttle to do experiments in space. They brought in a CRT TV on one of those tall carts for my class to watch the launch of the Space Shuttle happen live.

As the shuttle was ascending to space, there was a catastrophic explosion. They quickly turned off the TV and we were all in shock.

Boomers had Kennedy's assassination. GenX/Gen Jones had the #Challenger disaster. That day, I had too much work, so I decided not to watch the launch. It was the first launch I didn't view. When I heard the news, I felt somehow responsible.

For the first time ever the teachers wheeled in the TV / VCR as the class quietly expressed their grade school delight. The Space Shuttle Challenger was about to launch.
"3,2,1 Liftoff...." we're the last words I remember hearing before space travel was changed forever in an instant. A brave teacher, the first to fly in space, and a mission was lost.

Vor der morgigen #Waffenstellerkonferenz auf der U.S. Air Base #Ramstein (Rheinland-Pfalz) nimmt im In- und Ausland der Druck auf die #Bundesregierung zu, der Ukraine #Kampfpanzer des Modells Leopard 2 zu liefern. Kiew plant derzeit eine Frühjahrsoffensive, für die es neben den inzwischen zugesagten westlichen Schützen- bzw. Spähpanzern (#Marder, #Bradley, #AMX 10-RC) neue Kampfpanzer benötigt, um die russischen Linien erfolgreich durchbrechen zu können. Als ein mögliches Ziel der #Offensive ist die Krim in der Diskussion. Der Oberkommandierende der ukrainischen Streitkräfte veranschlagt für die Offensive 300 Kampfpanzer, 600 bis 700 #Schützenpanzer sowie 500 #Haubitzen. Die ersten Kampfpanzer – rund ein Dutzend #Challenger 2 – wird #Großbritannien liefern; #Polen und #Finnland haben bereits Leopard 2-Panzer zugesagt. Während die Debatte noch im Gange ist, werden schon weitere Schritte gefordert: #Lieferungen zunächst von #Kampfhubschraubern, dann von #Kampfjets. Nur mit ihnen könne die Ukraine, heißt es in Kommentaren, „den Krieg gewinnen“.
