The Grandmotherly Kindness of the Zen Masters, Diana St Ruth
To our western ears, Zen can often sound austere, unkind, even brutal and cruel. We hear about the rejections at the monastery gate, the hardships, humiliations and rough treatment its adherents are sometimes subjected to, and maybe we’re inclined to think it’s all a bit much for grown up people.

At the beginning you have to take up a koan, Zen master Bukko.
The emptiness of the sea lets waves rise, the emptiness of the mountain valley makes the voice echo, the emptiness of the heart makes the Buddha.

All things come together without our knowledge. Gien Inour Roshi
And then, all of a sudden, you have what is called an ‘enlightened person’. Before you had a confused person, now you have an enlightened person and it doesn’t help.

A Broken Broom, a Tattered Scripture
One is the Bodhisattva of the Great Path,
The other the Patriarch of the Great Buddha.
What evidence is there?
A broken broom, a tattered scripture, and unrhymed verse.

I live in the Red Hills bioregion of North Florida where I manage an interdisicplinary research facility.
I have been a #vajrayana #Buddhist since 1988. My primary connections are with the #Drikung and #Nyingma traditions. I am also involved with a #Chan community.
I volunteer with #hospice, and mentor incarcerated Buddhist practitioners.
For better or worse, ones of my interests is creative #writing. Be warned-- it might happen here.
