Cushing Manzanita (Arctostaphylos glandulosa ssp cushingiana) stump sprouting from a burl after the 2017 Nuns Canyon fire. Of the 4 species we have in this area, this is the only stump sprouter. It was first to resprout post fire, while the others have come back well from seed. This specimen has seen a LOT of historic fires over the years (1923, 1964 known). The Burl is about 5 feet in diameter. Has to be well over 100 years old. #floraspondence #ChaparralFire #chaparral
