“…most of the focus in community ecology has been, up to now, on more obviously functional phenotypes — morphological diversity, and metabolic diversity. They’ve shown that the chemical content of plants’ tissues is more closely related to their phylogenetic history than traits in those categories.”

Excellent review by molecular ecologist Jeremy Yoder on recent paper examining chemical ecology & diversity.

Intertidal seaweeds “eavesdrop” and maybe they “talk”. Check out our new paper in @SciReports on chemical signaling in Ulva (sea lettuce).

It’s time! I’m Hannah, I’m leading the Lab of Colourful Animals at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena, Germany. We work together to understand the role that toxins play in driving the evolution of new adaptations in predators and prey. We research poison frogs in Costa Rica; snakes that eat toxic toads; milkweed plants, milkweed herbivores, and the predators of these herbivores.

… We’ve accidentally selected for epichloë+plants which can be problematic since the chemicals sicken livestock. An example of an alkaloid you might know—LSD is produced by this group of fungi!

Our group is funded to look at how Epichloë changes the microbiome within dune grass. Since it’s vastly changing the we expect this to drive community composition and microbiome networks
