Although John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood are consistently credited with the `discovery' of the Maya Civilization, there were many who preceded them who sparked their interest in making their famous travels through Mesoamerica. https://www.worldhistory.org/article/418/early-explorers-of-the-maya-civilization-from-agui/ #History #Chacchoben #ChichenItza #MayaCivilization

The Mayan religious text, the Popol Vuh (known by many names, among them, The Light That Came From Beside The Sea) is the Quiche Maya story of creation translated into Spanish in the early 18th century CE by the missionary Francisco Ximenez from much older tales. https://www.worldhistory.org/article/414/maya-religion-the-light-that-came-from-beside-the/ #History #Burial #Chacchoben #ChichenItza

Gov't says the ruins are open, but the roads to it are blocked by protesters
Things have been awkward for some time. There have been so many vendors that the Chichen Itza's UNESCO World Heritage Site status was threatened (2019 article)
However officials trying to crack down on Maya people speaking Maya at the most famous and visited ancient Maya holy site is very bad, insensitive & colonialist.
No doubt there were designated areas of markets in pre-Hispanic Chichen Itza! I hope some reasonable solution can be arrived at.
Many locals around the ruins of Chichen Itza have been relying on selling to tourists. Conflicts with the Mexican Federal Gov't have reached the point that striking locals are blocking access to the ruins.

I take the day off and look, #ChichenItza news. A tourist hops the fence, climbs the Temple of Kukulcan pyramid, dances on the stairs, then gets abused by crowd, including this award-winning comment, "Where is Namor when you need him?" https://www.milenio.com/virales/lady-chichen-itza-mujer-sube-piramide-kukulkan-critican-videos
This is my second first post. The first one, which was quite clever if I say so myself, timed out before uploading. Mastodon, like it's namesake suggest, is big and slow. Let's hope it isn't because someone is herding it over a cliff.
Here's a photo of archaeologist Sylvanus Morley sitting on a Chac Mool at #ChichenItza, 1932.
