@gamingonlinux This is why Distributions like #AlpineLinux and #ChimeraLinux / @chimera_linux actively remove & replace #GNUtils and work to get #Linux built by #LLVM / #Clang instead of #GCC...
Even I do want to yeet tools out of my workflow...
But @ncommander went into the details re: #RMS!

Taking a first look at Chimera Linux in a VM. Minimal, console-only install with LUKS encryption + LVM.
Chimera Linux is an interesting re-working of what a Linux distro can be. The part that immediately stands out is the pairing of the kernel with BSD-userland tools, but its much more than that.
FAQ is well-written and website documentation quickly gets you started. @wezm has a great post about his experience running Chimera for a month:

@lunaa @yura @torvalds I know...
There's a reason Distros like #AlpineLinux, #ChimeraLinux and almost all #embedded systems using #Busybox or #Toybox want to get rid of #glibc if not replace it with something like #uClinux, #musl,or another #libc...
Because glibc bricking stuff with minor updates kills any #CCSS and any non-#FLOSS that can't be recompiled.
And what RMS et. al. may see as intentional, I think is the biggest issie that prevents #Linux from dominating #Desktop|s!

@techlore Yes, however you can turn immutible off if you want to in /bin/ -- if you're going to do that you might as well install #ArchLinux or #ChimeraLinux
@greymatter @sataa @ncommander @ActionRetro I think that #ChimeraLinux is showing the way by yeeting all the #GNU & #FSF shit out of the system.
The fact that #Win32 is the most stable #API & #ABI on #Linux is a shame and testiment to the lack of fucks given by #glibc and other projects.
#Busybox, #Toybox, #uClinux and #Musl are working solutions espechally in #embedded setups where #GNUtils are seen as unstable #bloat.

::: Chimera Linux - GNUless Linux & built from scratch :linux:
...now entering Alpha state!
The infrastructure in place:
* Central build system (build / publish packages)
* Continuous pull requests
* A proper package repo browser
* Nightly global update-check for packagers
The C library is provided by musl (patched to use LLVM's).

Many benefits to #Arch. For one, no systemd worries.
Obviously small and (in my experience) really fast. The community is still real life people who write and develop like people. After CentOS, RHEL desktop and Kubuntu, I am back on windows. (Not good.)
I was on Arch. I feel I need to get back there, but i am worried about dual boot.
#chimeralinux blends Arch with BSD but does system control in Python rather than shell. Makes sense given shell isnt meant to be overblown.
@otfrom I do avoid them as much as possible.
Sadly, unless all distros purge the RMS-tainted GNU trash, I'm kinda forced to use it in ~ some capacity ~ due to the socioeconomic requirement to do #WageWork.
Personally, I avoid using them at all costs whereever possible, but sadly all relevant distros still use #bash instead of #fish and #ChimeraLinux isn't something I can introduce or shove into production...

@dwarmstrong
OK! This is interesting to me. I am with Alpine, also Musl libraries - and #ChimeraLinux. Chimera seeks to replace (among many things) Bash.
I am not certain what you mean by setup script - init, install ??
Eager to find out.

Non-GNU: BSD with a Linux kernel
https://chimera-linux.org/about/
Uniquely the first departure from GNU in Linux. Author has opinions that I find hilarious.
I was attracted because BSD backed me up wrt to SSL (20-odd years ago), and I have issues with Richard Stallman's return.
(Stallman posted some strange stuff here about Forests not having rights. His reasoning instantly made me concerned about children and rights. And, sure enough, he was mixed up with #Epstein all along.)
#ChimeraLinux looks very nice so far.
i've managed to install it. obviously, not without a help from the community and q66 himself.
it's lightweight, clean, but yet has poor wiki page, in which i am thinking to contribute a little.
l
tried out #ChimeraLinux.
even taking into account that i followed the official wiki fully, it didn't work at all.
apk just didn't stop throwing errors that i couldn't even understand.
maybe it is me being dumbass, but i just can't even install it. but i want to.
#Linux comes in many forms, most are #GNU / Linux but now we have a new run on #BSD / Linux in the form of #ChimeraLinux

After 25 years of using Linux and some 10 years of dabbling in BSD lands, I think I'm witnessing the birth of a distro to blend their strengths better than #Gentoo or #Void Linux: https://fosdem.org/2023/schedule/event/chimera_linux/

A Non-GNU Linux Distribution Built With LLVM & BSD Software Aims For Alpha Next Month - Phoronix https://www.phoronix.com/news/BSD-LLVM-Linux-Alpha-Coming
Β«Chimera Linux since shifting focus as a "BSD" Linux distribution has been relying on core tools from FreeBSD, making use of LLVM/Clang rather than GCC, and achieved self-booting in late 2021. For the package manager Alpine Linux's apk is being usedΒ».
