Today is the birthday of the great Anna May Wong, who made her starring role debut at 17 in the red-and-green silent film The Toll of the Sea in 1922 - over a century ago!
One of my movie-watching highlights of 2022 was a monthlong celebration of her work on TCM, including Old San Francisco (1927), Picadilly (1929), Daughter of the Dragon (1931), Shanghai Express (1932), and Lady from Chungkung (1942) in which she plays an underground resistance fighter.

For today's long read, a dive into #ChineseAmerican #AsianAmerican history on my old blog, from 2007, "Immigrant Dreams and Nightmares in the White Supremacist Cauldron": https://kaichang.typepad.com/zuky/2007/05/immigrant_dream.html
"Chinese Americans never forget the fact that the Statue of Liberty faces out across the Atlantic Ocean, towards Europe. The huddled masses coming across the Pacific have never been greeted by a Mother of Exiles. More often, they have been greeted by racist laws & white supremacist violence."

Funny thing that's been true on #Mastodon but also true on social media previously, is that I'm usually gregarious/popular in real life but on social media, I'm apparently poison lol. Ppl boost every post in a thread *except* for mine, or just never respond, or 100 examples, I don't take it too hard, I know I'm #ChineseAmerican etc, these threads tend to have a vibe that elbows me out, all good, been here since uh kindergarten. They think I can't shoot a jumpshot. But they're wrong. :)
Gonna post a better #introduction now that I've been on here a bit.
Hi! I'm Kai, I like cooking and eating good food. #ChineseAmerican born in New York, now #ChineseCanadian living in #Vancouver, where I founded a #CommunityGarden on a hospital rooftop & #volunteer cook at a shelter for people getting out of homelessness. I've spent my career in software, but always active in politics, street/online activism, #bipoc #AntiRacism. I like old movies, libraries, jazz, Scotties dogs.
See ya round!
