The peak of Chinese New Year for me is on the ninth day in Penang, when the whole neighbourhood comes alive with fireworks, firecrackers and well, setting fire to golden paper. 拜天公，literally praying to the heavenly grandfather or Jade Emperor, involves lots of fruit offerings, smoked meat, and sugar cane for some reason. Part of the rich Hokkien culture here in the community that still values tradition.

I recall seeing a tweet that CNY is disrespectful to other Asian cultures who also celebrate, so it should be called LNY, but then I have also seen that it’s disrespectful to dismiss the Chinese origins of the celebration by calling it LNY. I see CNY used more frequently but that may not be ‘correct’. What’s best to use to avoid insult?
