"The town of #Nikopol – current population 50,000 – and other nearby cities are taking the threat of damage to the #NuclearPlant seriously. Last week for the first time they carried out #radiation drills, a rehearsal for what locals should do in case of a repeat of the 1986 #Chornobyl disaster" #Chernobyl #UkraineWar #Russia

What's this about a million deaths? At @uOttawaCIPS Dr Edwards cited something about #Chornobyl from the New York Academy of Sciences... @Dr_Keefer swiftly corrected the record, but the full story of this deceitful "report" is far more disturbing.

Today in 1986, the residents of Kyiv gathered for the annual May parade.
A few days earlier, the reactor at Chornobyl had exploded. Large levels of radiation were pouring into Kyiv.
But the kremlin ordered the Ukrainian party to proceed with the parade.
Children and pregnant women were at the parade - the radiation levels were high enough to cause stillbirth.
Here's a picture from that day - smiling people, happy. Unaware.

Today we remember the tragedy of #Chornobyl nuclear power plant.
Ukraine never forgot what happened, while russians seems to be unaware of the scale of it and what danger it poses.
See the video by @United24media on the consequences of russian occupation of Chornobyl.

Some fantastic pictures from the Chornobyl exclusion zone here, from @manniac.
Really do get a strong sense of how strange that place is; the signs of life interrupted, the way nature has return to the land that humans left.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy honored the memory of the victims of the #Chornobyl disaster
"37 years ago, the accident at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant left a huge scar on the whole world. The radiation leak turned the once cozy and developed territory into an exclusion zone. Today, the 30-kilometer zone around Chornobyl remains a dangerous place with a high concentration of radiation," Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted.

Here's an excellent documentary film about the 'Grannies of Chornobyl' - a group of old women who tired of living away from their homes following the evacuation, and in later life returned to live inside the exclusion zone. Really remarkable story.
Film costs 95 Ukrainian hryvnias to rent - that's about £2, give or take, for a 70 minute film.

On this day in 1986, the largest nuclear disaster in history occurred at Chornobyl.
Here is an excellent article by Ukrainian historian Serhii Plokhy about the events of those days - in particular, how they affected the people living nearby, and how to communists tried to hide what happened at the expense of people's lives.

The Polis'ka Village Council in the Vyshgorod district tried to reappropriate three plots of land which are owned by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
Polis'ka Village Council claimed the land plots were allocated to the Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve at the expense of communally owned lands. If the claim had been successful, more than 29,000 hectares of the reserve would have been removed from state ownership.
However, the Kyiv Oblast Economic Court rejected the claims of the village council and therefore the plots remain part of the state-owned nature reserve.
The reserve was set up in 2016 by a presidential decree (Petro Poroshenko) and has become an area where the native forest ecosystem can thrive.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has launched an observation mission at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
Similar missions have previously worked at the Rivne and South Ukrainian nuclear power plants. The Khmelnytsky NPP is also under the control of Ukraine and is also waiting for representatives of the agency. In the meantime, the Zaporizhzhia NPP is under Russian occupation, but IAEA representatives have been there since September 2022.
