Had Aldi antipasto with my favourite (to date) Rauchbier. Compared with much of the #ChristmasInJuly advent calendar, a serious taste explosion.

Day 25! Mountain Goat (Richmond, VIC) Hightail XXV Rare Breed, aged in Cognac barrels. 10.5% ABV This is the sort of winter warmer I have been holding out for. Like a barley wine, but smooooth! Delicious.

Today's calendar beer is 10.5% ABV, and I am loath to start on such as first of the #ChristmasInJuly night, so going with a more sensible 4.5% ABV witbier, Blanche de Namur. Beyond Belgium, I can't tell you where it is from, as the label is printed in what I guess to be 6 point type.

Over in Germany, this would be a Weissbier, and I am a long time Weissbier fan, so was wondering what to expect. Good gods below, it's GORGEOUS!

I see that today's #ChristmasInJuly beer is a high gravity one (10.5% ABV) which looks to fit the winter warmer bill, so a fitting end.

Day 23 White Bay (Sydney) Walls and Windmills Hazy Pale Ale. 5.4% ABV A fruity and VERY drinkable drop. Definitely one of the better ones. Not something I could source locally, but there are a couple of tropical pale ales that come close.

Day 21 (yesterday) Beer Farm Shiravignon Shiraz-sav wild hybrid ale. Basically wine with wild yeast fermentation, then pitched with wort and wine yeast. 6.8% ABV. Different, was undecided initially, but quire liked it.

Day 19 Yuli's Brews (Alexandria, NSW) Hans Gopo Farmhouse Quencher, 4.1% ABV Another production beer. This brewery appears to use (assumed fictional) characters as mascots for their brews. A light, crisp table beer. Cruel putting such beers in a selection like this, because it's something that should be served in a large jug, not a 375ml can. As this is a production beer, will see if Beer Cartel stocks it. Would love to have this on hand in the summer. #ChristmasInJuly

OK, you've got my attention. Did I see Weizenbock? Day 17. Coastal Brewing Co (Forster, NSW) Wallingat Weizenbock. 5.9% ABV It's exactly what it says on the label, and is DELICIOUS. One of the best so far, if not the best. This is far more of what I would call a winter-friendly style. (The others have been stouts/porters.)

Since the #ChristmasInJuly calendar isn't delivering on winter warmers, I have organised my own - mixed Belgian 12 pack of (mostly) high-gravity beers, Doppelbock, and Rauchbier.

I'd honestly say that the calendar, so far, has been non-winter beers.

Day 16. Slipstream (Yeerongpilly, QLD) Oregon West Coast Tour IPA. 6.6% ABV An OK IPA, but nothing special. Why the need for imported malt, I have no idea. It's not like Australia is short on malting barley.

This is the third in a row with a printed can, rather than plain aluminium with a label, suggesting a "production" beer.

Day 15 Batch (Marrickville NSW) Voodoo Hoppy Amber, 5.6% ABV. Described Style: American Amber Ale. OK, but this style doesn't really do anything for me. I think we might have different definitions of what constitutes hoppy.

Day 14 Grifter Brewing Co, Marrickville NSW. Old Panther black lager, 4.6% ABV. As slightly sweet Schwarzbier, with a complex and pleasant flavour.

Drunk from a DAB glass, because my Weissbier glass is still hot from the dishwasher.

Day 12 Bridge Road (Beechworth, VIC) White Peach and Raspberry Sour, 4.3% ABV. Tastes nothing like beer, a bit like raspberries. I hate raspberries. If I had to find one redeeming feature, it was a bit sour. In its favour, I finished it, but it nearly went down the sink. Nul points. I'm having a gin.
