I'm looking for examples of forgiveness from church history.

E.g. Corrie ten Boom forgiving a Nazi guard from the concentration camp

Any suggestions?

8) Eat chocolate for breakfast

Each day he started the morning study with chocolate for breakfast, which I'm sure we can all agree is the secret to a happy ministry.

7) Don't pursue fame

Gill usually published not for self-promotion but at request.

He wasn't eager for recognition.

When awarded an honorary doctorate he told his elders "I neither thought it, nor bought it, nor sought it."

Being a pastor was enough for him.

6) Know when to stop

Gill's friends arranged a midweek meeting for Christians from other churches to come and listen to him.

These continued for years.

However, later in life this was too much in addition to his writing and pastoral ministry.

5) Know when to stop controversy

Gill got sucked into controversy - perhaps too much.

But he knew when to stop.

He was often dragged into Baptism debates.

He decided at a certain point not to write on the issue any more. Surely this is wisdom!

4) Make time to study

Baptists could not pursue theological education.

Gill was an incredible talent. He was proficient in Latin, Greek and Hebrew before he was 18.

He never stopped learning, perfecting his Hebrew with a local Rabbi.

He made time to learn so he could teach.

3) Pursue friendships

Gill met with other dissenting pastors once a week at a coffee house.

This is a significant amount of time. But surely it helped him support other pastors and himself too.

2) Have a manageable schedule

We've all heard the myths of pastors who woke at 3am to pray.

Gill wasn't an early riser or a night owl.

He rested more as life went on.

He didn't think this was a weakness. Rather he recommended it to young Ryland as the secret of his productivity.

1) Preach first

Gill didn't neglect his congregation to write books.

Rather he preached through books of the Bible and kept notes.

These became his commentary later. He did the same with his systematic theology.

Gill was a pastor first.

How does a productive pastor not burn out?

John Gill wrote
โ€ข The first English entire Bible commentary
โ€ข The first Baptist systematic theology.

Yet he didn't work an insane schedule

He pastored form 21 to 74 and never burnt out.

Here's what I learnt from his life:

St Nicholas of Turkey, later associated with Claus, participated in the Council of Nicea, which developed the Nicean Creed, still recited in many churches today. He even purportedly slapped Arius of Egypt when Arius expressed doubt in the Trinity. Source: bit.ly/3GwAWMr (Julie Roys)

Combining my historical interest and the festive season in one scene from Newton's 'Christmas Boxes', 1794. The gravedigger asks the clergyman for a Christmas box and receives a threatening refusal - 'Give you a halter you rascal. What should I give you a Christmas box for?' The reference to a halter suggests the hangmanโ€™s noose. An open grave in the background suggests that the gravedigger has been busy (@britishmuseum)

This skull-shaped tomb decoration was recovered from the war-damaged (now demolished) church of St Lawrence in Exeter. The skull was accompanied by crossed bones which can be seen on either side of the skull just below the eye sockets. The teeth of the skull are still just about visible. c16th-17th century

False Doctrine Of The Assumption Of Mary

My :

"There is no evidence of any tradition concerning Mary's Dormition and Assumption from before the fifth century. The only exception to this is Epiphanius' unsuccessful attempt to uncover a tradition of the end of Mary's life towards the end of the fourth century, and his failure confirms the otherwise deafening silence."

Stephen J. Shoemaker, The Ancient Traditions of the Virgin Mary's Dormition and Assumption, 26.
