Here is something that the City of Edinburgh could learn from, closing Central Madrid to cars over holidays resulted in a 9.5% boost in retail spending on its main shopping street. And there was also a 71% drop in air pollution.

Walking to work this morning, a BMW driver made a u-turn at the 3-stop corner next to a primary school. The Bell truck driver that followed her just rolled slowly through the stop sign without stopping while eating a toast (I was at eye level with him eating peanut butter). While I was crossing in parallel with the breakfast-eater, the Subaru driver that had stopped on my right just decided to pass in front of me, like I wasn't there. Good morning everyone!

I was invited as a panel member to the discussion Car-free visions: Bristol.

I will be joining representatives of Friends of the Earth, West of England Shared Transport & Active Travel, Adfree cities and local residents.

Amongst the draft questions, one is for me, and there is a lot to say!
How does the way cities are currently organised influence our travel decisions?

Hope you can join us and/or share the event!

Monday 23rd January 2023, 7:30 to 9:30 pm
Easton Community Centre, Kilburn Street, BS5 6AW.

My friend Ari wrote this powerful piece, which he would sum up as

"“” is a verb, not an adjective!

Moving past that paternalistic approach of doing things “to” or “for” disabled people is a big part of moving past where we’re at with accessibility and cultural perceptions around disability – and all the limiting beliefs they bring – at the moment."

This reminder is needed every day, as is a change of paradigm!

Give it a read!

Our cities need urgently to stop thinking in terms of "complementarity" of transport modes, and start to HIERARCHIZE and PRIORITIZE them by favouring the most economical modes in terms of space, energy and pollution.

What an irony! Volvo is sending hard-copy promotion called "freedom to move" - i.e. freedom to those who can afford luxury cars, and will clog roads reducing everyone's ability to get around. Plus the publicity is sent to people who didn't sign up, and each "magazine" weighs 350g.

Bye, Twitter!

I don't want to participate anymore in a platform mismanaged by an alt-right maniac. I also have serious concerns about the hate speech. In the longer run Twitter will probably collapse anyway.

For now, I am keeping my account open but will probably not be posting content there anymore.

I have high hopes for Mastodon and hope the interesting exchanges I had in the past on Twitter continue here.

I found myself on a random little tour of Scandinavia and now Germany. I'm both impressed by bike traffic and provision for bikes, but I also find this "almost-cohabitation" dangerous for people, children, or elderly.

A friend living in Aotearoa just sent me this...
Yes, I'd like to come back, but certainly not for this 😿😿😿

She had said previously that "that train is like a unicycle. I could see how it *could* be convenient. But it's not." 😿

Well this is good news! @BrentToderian Scotland considering banning development of edge of town big box retail parks to protect and enhance core areas and reduce car dependency!

Drive-thrus and retail parks could be banned in Scotland under new plans to tackle climate change.
