Savannah picks emancipated Black woman to replace name of slavery advocate (Calhoun) on historic square
Susie King Taylor is the first person of color whose name will adorn one of Savannah’s 23 squares. It’s the first time in 140 years that Savannah has approved a name change for one of the picturesque, park-like squares that are treasured features of the original plan for the city founded in 1733.

Here is a link to the Friedrich Jahn Memorial in Forest Park
The monument is place on the site occupied by the German pavilion during the 1904 World's Fair. Jahn was the father of systematic physical culture and founder of the Turnvereins. The bust is generally considered out of proportion with the accompanying statues. The monument was donated by the North American Turnverein, St. Louis Chapter and was unveiled in October of 1913.

From the opening paragraph:
"Nowhere else in American history has a single group of foreigners or a single cohort of leaders made such a difference in the course of a region as in St. Louis between April and June 1861, when the government of Missouri was defied and then overthrown by an uprising licensed by the United States Government"

One of the best-known Turner regiments was the 17th Missouri Volunteers, which prevented St Louis from falling into Confederate control. Ulysses S. Grant speculated:
"If St. Louis had been captured by the rebels it would have made a vast difference . . . it would have been a terrible task to recapture St. Louis, one of the most difficult that could have been given to any military man. Instead of a campaign before Vicksburg it would have been a campaign before St. Louis."

Does Washington, D.C. Really Need Another Lincoln Statue?
"I think he would say that this is a missed opportunity to shine the light on any number of African American leaders or historic moments in the story of emancipation and Black freedom.
Why not honor someone like Carter G. Woodson, Paul Dunbar, Alain Locke or even Grimke, to name just a few."

Putin has given an emergency televised address calling Prigozhin's mutiny "treason", promising:
* to do everything to protect Russia
* that Russian armed forces “have been given the necessary orders”
* '“decisive action” would be taken to stabilise the situation."
There's about to be a battle on Russian soil.

Stewart was born, raised and lived most of his life in Petersburg, Virginia. He was a tireless advocate for the small historic Black community of Pocahontas Island and its rich history that went back to the 17th century.

A History Lesson for Kevin Seefried
Mr. Seefried expects us to believe that his embrace of the Confederate was an accident, that it had nothing to do with its well documented history of white supremacy and violence.
Regardless of whether this is true, he will now forever be tied to this symbol of hate.

Book Review: ‘James Longstreet and the American Civil War’ by Harold M. Knudsen
In conclusion, Knudsen opines that “On the corps level he was the only one of the Confederate side who innovated on a large scale —and therefore Longstreet deserves recognition as the Confederacy’s most modern general.” Readers are given ample information to decide for themselves.

Alabama and Mississippi are the only states left that ‘bundle’ the celebration of the civil rights leader and the Confederate general on the third Monday of January.
Jeff Daniel (AKA Joshua Chamberlain) Finds Real-Life Gettysburg Connection
Daniels learned that one of his grandfathers, Melvin H. Storms, fought at the Battle of Gettysburg with the famed Iron Brigade. I am really struggling getting through Stephen Sears description of the battle of Antietam as I do whenever the gross failure of Union generals (I'm looking at you McClellan) results in catastrophe for the Union army. The incredible waste of life and the prolongation of the war are the tragic results of incompetent leadership.
