I'm reading right now. are a window into the times. They also reveal nuances in of the time. I ran across an excerpt which piqued my interest in modern . I wonder how much we lose nowadays because of , , etc? How many more conversations nowadays are misinterpreted because of the missing factor of non-verbal communication?

‘I learned to recognise the thorough and primitive duality of man; I saw that, of the two natures that contended in the field of my consciousness, even if I could rightly be said to be either, it was only because I was radically both.’

‘In the drowsy heat of the summer afternoon the Red House was taking its siesta. There was a lazy murmur of bees in the flower-borders, a gentle cooing of pigeons in the tops of the elms.’

“Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to the delusions of our childish days; that can recall to the old man the pleasures of his youth; that can transport the sailor and the traveller, thousands of miles away, back to his own fire-side and his quiet home!”

Did you know that the greatest Christmas movie, Die Hard, is based on a novel called Nothing Lasts Forever?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nothing_

Apparently it's a very good book, so don't read the plot summary if you plan to try it out. But otherwise, read how the book ends. It's *dark* compared to the movie!

“Oh! But he was a tight-fisted hand at the grindstone, Scrooge! a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner! Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire.”

“Your hands are born open, and so is your heart; and though there may be times when your hands are empty, your heart is always full, and you can give things out of that—help and comfort and laughter—and sometimes that is the best help of all.”

“Sing, O Muse, of the man of many devices, who wandered full many ways after he had sacked the sacred citadel of Troy. Many were the men whose cities he saw and whose mind he learned, aye, and many the woes he suffered in his heart upon the sea, seeking to win his own life and the return of his comrades.”

Hello

I went into this - the last book of my 2022 Modern Library Classics Challenge - not knowing anything about it and thinking I would be disappointed. Boy was I wrong!

It's a slow burn psychological thriller with great characters and expressive, evocative language. Based on Goodreads, people either like it or hate it. I'm in the Like It Camp.
