Ten years ago I walked Wainwright's coast to coast (hard to belive it was so long ago) and I was on the home stretch (but not quite home) as I tackled the acend/descend stretch of the Cleveland Hills after risking life and limb to cross the A19, the trunk route from the main motorways to Teesside.

The Wainstones

Playing on the Cleveland Hills today. This is a familiar landmark to all who know these hills.

My dabble in artificial intelligence a few weeks ago, was not very convincing, but I thought I would give it another go. Maybe Shakespear with his iambic pentameter was too intelligent, so I thought KISS, 'keep it simple stupid', and asked the ChatGPT bot to write me a l ...

“T’ biggest hill in all Yorkshur”

It is generally accepted that the now populous district of the North Riding which we call Cleveland is bounded on its southern extremity by the Cleveland Hills. This is not so.

The district of Cleveland comprises the archdeaconry of that name, which extends considerably farther south, as far as Picker ...

The sight of low cloud from Bilsdale pouring over the cols in the Cleveland Hills always leaves me with wonder

This is looking down on Green Bank, a flattish ring contour rise marking the head of Raisdale, and separating Cringle or Cranimoor from the steep slope up Carlton Bank. The col is nowadays more commonly known as the 'Lordstones' on account of t ...

Sunset from Cliff Rigg

A very wet run this morning over the Cleveland Hills.

And after lunch, the sun came out. Blue skies.

So I dragged the dog up to Cliff Rigg for the sunset.

And she repaid me by thorough belching — I made that phrase up, inspired by the 18th-century expression of a 'thorough-cough' which is coughing and breaking wind backwards at the same t ...

Nanny Newgill, the Broughton Witch — Part II

Back on the Cleveland Hills after a few days break. I was reminded crossing Urra Moor that I need to post the second part of Richard Blakeborough's 1902 tale of Nanny Newgill, the Broughton Witch.

For Part I see here.
NANNY NEWGILL, THE BROUGHTON WITCH.
SYNOPSIS OF PART I.
Dinah Curry, a Broughton girl, marries a stranger ...

Nanny Newgill, the Broughton Witch

On a drizzly Cold Moor this morning I was reminded of one of Richard Blakeborough's tales about a witch who lived at Broughton.

That's Great Broughton on the Cleveland plain below, just left of centre. The peak of Roseberry Topping is on the skyline just right of centre.

Blakeborough's story appeared in the Northern Weekly Gazette ...

A temperature inversion covered the lowlands around Stokesley this morning, inching up the steep banks of the Cleveland Hills

The sheep munching away on the col between Cringle and Cold Moors are apathetically unaware of the creeping cloud.

The distinctive red earth is a spoil heap from jet working that has been burnt to convert the ...

Another magicial day

The temperature inversion was not quite as dramatic as yesterday. But tomorrow is looking wet so best appreciate the day.

The autumnal colours are particularly good this year with the fallowing of the oaks and beeches. Even the ubiquitous larch is looking splendid.

I came across this old use of the word 'fallow' the other day and I resolved to use it. In this context i ...
