AAAS: "Ocean geoengineering scheme aces it first field test" Powdered lime spread in Florida estuary drew down carbon + reduced acidification. About 10% of U.S. oysters had been sourced from the 'balmy, shallow waters of Apalachicola Bay, off Florida’s panhandle,' until in 2020 the state banned oyster harvesting for 5 yrs. The bay is warming + its waters acidifying because of rising dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) levels. Lime is calcium hydroxide, which combines with CO2 + reverses some of the acidification. Lime is an alkaline powder + the key ingredient in cement production. In the picture it was combined with a nontoxic red dye to track its diffusion through the water. "The experiment is also a rare test of geoengineering, the controversial proposition of artificially altering the atmosphere or ocean to counteract the effects of rising CO2" The CO2 is sequesterd in the form of calcium carbonate deposited in the shells + skeletons of sea creatures. One of the experimental releases was deeper in the estuary, + it resulted in a lowering of CO2 levels by 70ppm, making room for more. They 'monitored oyster + microbial metabolisms during the trail + saw no red flags.' The ocean additives tended to last a month before being diluted + dispersed. I'm not a proponent of geoengineering in general, as fighting the fossil fuel indsutries is far, far more important, but I'm also trying to keep an open mind here. #geoengineering #climatechangemitigation

Wilder, more diverse lawns also do a great job of absorbing water, preventing floods. They also act as carbon sinks, keeping some of that carbon away from our atmosphere and doing their bit for #ClimateChangeMitigation
