In some places our greatest fears are being realised. Events are moving faster than we can adapt.

“The climate has already changed, and neither the built environment nor the response systems are keeping up with the change.”— Craig Fugate

Would you live in a building, cross a bridge, or trust a dam wall if there were a 10 percent chance of it collapsing? Or 5 percent? Or 1 percent? Of course not! In civil engineering, acceptable probabilities of failure generally range from 1-in-10,000 to 1-in-10-million.

So why, when it comes to climate action, accepted when they have success rates of just 50 to 66 percent?

"Climate breakdown has begun" as Phoenix breaks another heat record

Story by Andrei Ionescu, September 11, 2023

"According to the National Weather Service (NWS), on Saturday, September 9, the temperatures in Phoenix, Arizona set a new heat record, continuing to rise as the city broke its previous record of the most days at or above 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 Celsius).

New record

"This was the 54th day this year that the temperatures in Phoenix surpassed 110F – one day more that the record of 53 days set in 2020. Moreover, the daily average temperature of 97F (36.1C) in June, July, and August surpassed the previous record of 96.7 (35.9) set three years ago.

"As the weekend highs were expected to range between 108F and 114F (with night temperatures between 80F and 88F), NWS issued an excessive heat warning until 8pm on Sunday.

Anthropogenic climate change

"The scientists blame anthropogenic climate change correlated to the advent of El Nino (a temporary warming of parts of the Pacific Ocean impacting weather all over the globe). However, since this natural phenomenon is expected to peak at the beginning of next year, 2024 will most likely break all the records set this year.

"'The dog days of summer are not just barking, they are biting,' warned United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. "Climate breakdown has begun.'"

It’s local elections in Norway today, and so far it looks like the whole country is moving to the right. Like WTF ?! Clearly Norwegians don’t give a shit about the despite the country literally falling apart this summer.

I have many much stronger words about this, but I’m hoping I’m just to upset to read numbers properly and that I have to eat my words tomorrow.

This is not planet Earth as we found it. The world we’ve known all our lives is vanishing in front of our eyes.

Human civilization was built upon the certainty of a stable, predictable climate allowing consistently reliable agriculture producing decade after decade of steady economic growth and allowing huge, thriving coastal cities.

But now we're seeing what happens when human industry pumps a *trillion* tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere in only a few decades, when we warm the oceans to levels never seen in human history, and when we threaten the survival of everything that makes our lives possible.

The past is gone. Continue to hope and work for the best, but *prepare* for the worst.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but these need to end. For the sake of our children and grand-children.

Lets welcome mosquitoes to the UK! After decades of a mozzy-free life in London, recent summers have been blighted by the little bastards. This weekend I have 3 big, red, itchy welts. Used half a tube of anti-hist creme, and last night took an anti-hist tab. 12 hours of sleep, strong coffee and 3 hours later I'm still woozy and unproductive.

If you look beyond the daily hubbub of party politics and culture wars, you'll find that underneath it all is a far more dangerous threat — out of control climate breakdown, the collapse of civilization, and mass extinction.

But let's not talk about that. Isn't celebrity gossip more entertaining and reassuring?

For most people, it is. For the rest of us, here's the latest bad news...

Antarctica is warming at about double the rate of the rest of the planet and far more quickly than widely-cited models projected, according to a study published Thursday that alarmed scientists around the world.

"This is absolutely devastating news," declared climate scientist and University College London professor emeritus Bill McGuire.

"First, one has to wonder if perhaps we have already passed the West Antarctic collapse tipping point," McGuire added on social media. "Second, it begs the question, are other climate model projections underestimating the speed of climate breakdown?"
