“Very belatedly, the BBC, along with politicians and the corporations, concedes that the climate crisis is real and we therefore need to invest in lots of new expensive technologies that are supposedly going to save us. I argue that the climate crisis is real and that the new technologies being so aggressively promoted are mostly not going to help, and that instead the climate-crisis discourse is being weaponised to make Big Oil and other corporations even richer, while nothing effective is actually done.”

“We are about to set the evolutionary clock back by many tens of millions of years. If you understand Earth as a complex, living entity where humans have emerged as the pinnacle of consciousness after billions of years of evolution – the only place in the universe where we know for sure that has happened – continuing to trash the planet because doing something to stop it might infringe on our ‘personal liberty’ seems short-sighted, to put it mildly.”

" brothers fuel media with millions of dollars - Farris and Dan Wilks’ deep pockets fund denialism education, conservative politicians and pro- projects

Two billionaire Texas brothers whose fortunes derive from oil and gas fracking have pumped millions of dollars into rightwing media outfits that have promoted climate-crisis denialism and sent more big checks to back an array of evangelical projects and conservative Texas politicians.

The fracking billionaires Farris and Dan Wilks have each doled out millions of dollars through separate foundations over the last decade to a number of high-profile conservative and religious groups including the Heritage Foundation, Family Research Council and Focus on the Family.

“Thanks to their incredible wealth and largesse, the country as well as the [Republican] party are now feeling the effects of their aggressive brand of religiously-charged political activism,” said Darren Dochuk, a history professor at the University of Notre Dame and author of Anointed with Oil."

all too familiar 😩
"Far-right outsider takes shock lead in Argentinian primary elections - Javier Milei, an admirer of Donald Trump, thinks the climate crisis is a lie and wants sale of human organs to be legalised

"The far-right populist Javier Milei rocked Argentina’s political establishment on Sunday by emerging as the leader in primary elections to choose presidential candidates for the October general election.

Milei, an admirer of the former US president Donald Trump, says Argentina’s central bank should be abolished, thinks the climate crisis is a lie, characterises sex education as a ploy to destroy the family, believes the sale of human organs should be legal and wants to make it easier to own handguns.

Votes were still being counted late on Sunday but analysts agreed that the upstart candidate, who gained notoriety – and a rockstar-like following – by angrily ranting against the “political caste”, did much better than expected and is a real contender for the presidency.

With about 92% of polling locations reporting, Milei had about 30% of the total vote, according to official results. The candidates in the main opposition coalition, United for Change, were at 28% and the current governing coalition, Union for the Homeland, had 27%."

> Fighting the "Climate Crisis" is an
> ineffective and unrealistic assumption
> that climate change is a problem that
> can be "solved."

Fighting it is not an "assumption". It is an "action".

The "assumption" is that we can win, but if THAT assumption is wrong, there is considerable danger to humanity.

Your statement is analogous to saying it's ineffective and unrealistic to fight an incoming enemy mounting a military attack with a very large army. It matters to try.

> This turns out not to be the case.

I note the absence of a reference here. You offer this as unsupported opinion with a tone that suggests ohherwise.

The stakes are also very high, since the global consensus among scientists is that we understand the problem and that it matters to try to address it because continuing as we are now is actively making the problem worse, courting risky tipping points, generally unsustainable, and actively dangerous to human civilization.

> The Earth's climates are naturally variable,
> constantly changing as long as there has
> been an atmosphere, an ocean,
> and a sun around which it all revolves.

The human body is constantly changing yet much is known about medicine in modern days. And one thing we know is that you don't stop a cancer by delaying or claiming that these situations are variable or not worth caring about.

I am a cancer survivor because science detected and efficiently resolved the cancer in my ever-changing body.

The goal was not to stop the ever-changing part of my body. I still breathe, take in food, exercise, and age. All variable but natural. The goal was to stop the assault on these natural processes of vhange that would have put these natural processes from continuing safely.

> Eliminating fossil fuel burning
> will not "stop" climate change.

The climate science speaks to various contributing factors. If your house is being flooded because you have two pipe leaks, stopping just one will fix the whole problem. But yet it matters to fix each. And it helps slow rhe problem.

There is an extremely high degree of consensus among experts worldwide that fossil fuel burning is a major and ongoing contributing factor to the problem. Sayikng otherwise, even forcefully, eill not change that.

iopscience.iop.org/article/10.

> It may not even make an observable
> difference in natural climate variability,

This sentence is trying to sound science-y but again cannot even be addressed without first repairing its form. As noted above, the goal is not to change natural variability. Climate science observes that two curves are overlaid, one of natural variability and one a human-imposed deadly cancer. The goal is to remove the cancer, not to change the fact of natural variability

> We just don't know.

Nothing is ever 100% certain, but if you want a standard of 100% certainty, we cannot know anything whatsoever. At that point, iif you're going to uselessly unravel the entirety of himan belief on every topic, you might as well start with your own statement, which is unsupported by a very large amount of climate science.

To an unusually high degree of certainty, more than we typically ask of most things we make decisions about in life, we really do know that humans created this problem and that burning fossil fuels is a key and ongoing contributing factor. Saying otherwise is just noise, and dangerous to human survival.

From my essay "Humanity's Superpower":

"Science is a superpower that stands as a rock against rationalization and politics, that acts as a beacon to guide us through swirling fogs of wishful thinking and denialism. ... Without Science, our first encounter with a dangerous force is likely to be our last. Science offers super-vision, the ability to see beyond what is merely available to our eyes. But only if we opt to use that power."

Yeah, I've been using that term delayists for going on 5 years now, not just because of tactic but because it's a larger group than the denialists. Every time I hear paced goals to some future year (usually conveniently beyond the current term of office for whoever is saying it), I see delayism.

They are saying don't judge me for what I'm doing now, love me for what I'm NOT forcing you to do. Hate someone else for truth-telling later, and PLEASE don't study up enough to know that when it's ten times worse later than it needed to be, it's because of MY delay.

Biden is in this set. So are many Dems. They pick and choose, happy to like solar panels but still OK with new drilling, fracking, or natural gas. They won't go near the perils of consumerism or degrowth. They still insist on growing manufacturing. They aren't talking about real and imminent perils of drought and famine due to failed grain crops or loss of fish stocks due to heat. These will hit us suddenly with much talk of how surprised they are and who could have known?

We need to be a society that sees this coming, not one that is blind-sided or all the science was a waste. (netsettlement.blogspot.com/202)

They're proud they're in there instead of Republicans, and indeed the damage is less bad with them there, but they still daily risk "game over" scenarios by telling people that moving at a moderate pace is enough.

Physics does not grade on the curve and humanity will not survive merely by doing better than the worst case. There are realities we must embrace that do not get better, but probably-nonlinearly worse, by delay.

There can be no actual certainty about whether it is too late. Things are indeed not great, but we must always behave as if there is a chance.

Worse than humanity being done in by Climate would be wrongly diagnosing a winnable situation as "game over" and having civilization get wiped out by self-fulfilling defeatism.

> US lost 1/3 of its fleet in one afternoon, built a new fleet and defeated Japan.

Yeah, I keep hearing "society can only change so fast", but that's a good counterexample.

And even for Covid, though it bugged some, we reshaped who went to work and how almost overnight. Funds were allocated where people had none. We got through because we realized we had to.

The climate problem is not one of "can't" but of "doesn't seem that necessary". We're collectively in denial, much more than we realize.
