This piece in Marketplace is truly remarkable, considering the rapidly expanding and compounding risks posed by the evolving climate crisis to both local and global economies. (https://www.marketplace.org/2023/08/23/just-half-of-ceos-see-climate-change-as-a-risk-to-their-business/)
Every business faces a literal existential threat as a result of these and “yet just half of CEOs think of climate change as a risk to their business and just 19% think of it as a serious risk.”

Do NOT underestimate the impacts of a #heatwave:
🚧 on roads and other transport networks
⚡️ on energy demand
🏥 on health facilities
❄️ on cooling costs
💵 on insurance
🏭 on business disruption
✈️ on industries such as tourism.
🐄 on crops and livestock
🐠 on marine resources and aquaculture

It's official, and comes as no surprise, considering what we have experienced, 2023 had the hottest boreal summer (June-July-August) on record.

Let’s not kid ourselves. We ARE on a highway to hell with our foot firmly on the gas.
The science:
“Limiting warming to 2°C [we missed the 1.5° opportunity window] involves RAPID, DEEP and in most cases IMMEDIATE greenhouse gas emission reductions” (IPCC SYR, Page 22)
Our response pictured.
“We believe that the current policy environment and government actions are insufficient for a rapid decline of fossil-fuel consumption.” (https://www.eiu.com/n/fossil-fuel-demand-to-continue-expanding-this-decade/)

As I have said elsewhere preparing for the summer of 2024 should start right now.
Also we have 7 summers until we reach a permanent +1.5°C of warming with its chaos.
Each summer from now on will be a dress rehearsal for that 1.5° world. Applicable across the northern hemisphere.

We have a pretty clear understanding of what is causing this pollution. We saw it during the Covid lockdowns.
We need to end daily commutes with fossil fuel driven vehicles, the pollution from which are literally causing millions of deaths *every year.*
🚶♀️walk to work if you can
🚲 cycle to work if you can
🚋 use public transport if you can
🚙 use an EV if you can
🚗 drive less
🏡 work from home if you can
We have the solutions Let’s use them!
We have another 7 summers until we arrive at a permanent +1.5°C of warming.
Many places have taken immense strain at the current average of +1.28°C
Every 0.1° will just bring more chaos
The idea that events will be set in motion at +2°C that kill a billion humans doesn’t seem that far fetched.

As transportation is right up there with electricity and heat for the sectors responsible for the most emissions globally, this news from China is heartening:
“China reaches peak gasoline in milestone for electric vehicles”: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2023-08-29/china-reaches-peak-gasoline-in-milestone-for-electric-vehicles
Transport efficiency next!

Recently during a session with a group of journalists who were wanting to improve their climate literacy to ensure accurate reporting we had the team engage in what is officially know as a "participatory integrated assessment modelling" exercise, using the #EnROADS climate simulator.
Pictured is the scenario they created.

> We know where the emissions are coming from.
> We know what we have to do in order to avoid a catastrophic future.
The choices we make everyday are either driving emissions up or driving them down.
This is our greatest challenge, and NO ONE,
Not a government,
Not a business,
Not a community,
Not a family,
Not an individual,
NO ONE, is exempt from playing a part in what what happens next.

Current warming above the preindustrial average: +1.28°C
June 2023: +1.4°C
July 2023: +1.54°C
We are on track to reach +1.5°C of warming by about 2030 and +2°C by about 2050.
What will the heat domes look like then?

Just a reminder, the extreme events we are currently experiencing is all happening with the background warming of +1.28°C above preindustrial.
Things are only just getting started. The next 27 years are going to be filled with climate chaos.

Today I got to spend some time with a media outlet who want to ensure that they report accurately on the dveloping climate crisis.
We engaged in a participatory modelling exercise using #EnROADS where the goal was keep global temperatures below 2ºC
This is a powerful #ClimateLiteracy exercise!
Together the team achieved the goal of limiting temperatures to 1.7ºC
The key takeaway was "this will not be easy to do, but it will be totally worth it!"
The Japan Meteorological Agency has released their August #ElNino monitoring data.
SST's above +2ºC are considered a "super el nino" by many.
(See https://ds.data.jma.go.jp/tcc/tcc/products/elnino/elmonout.html#fig3)
As we look at all the news of severe weather events, floods, heatwaves, wild fires etc. let us remember that the science on why we are seeing all this has been super clear for decades. As a reminder:

Attribution studies play such a crucial role in our understanding the evolution of the climate crisis.
Here is some excellent research as always from World Weather Attribution. 🧪
