Nonsense at "hardship".
Folk having less crap to waste isn't " hardship".

The economic and sociopolitical system isn't broken, it's operating exactly as it was designed to do. To sustain inequality.

Do you think that a book about how to really mitigate human caused climate change will be popular in a capitalist consumerist society?
Would such a book align with the populations general opinions about climate change and what to do about it?

An interesting discussion about Cognitive Dissonance & ecological based thinking.

We need a "can do" message in the context of mitigating human caused climate change & species extinction (mutually inclusive)
We *can* reduce the private car industry, the sprawling road (kill) networks & instead invest in public transport.
A reality based "can do" message is the opposite of industries, the private sectors, greenwash.
Sure, they sure "can do" greenwash & delude themselves that the "crazy" car culture isn't wrecking the planet.
However, we need a realistic, practically achievable "can do" vision.

And now for a parody from the Rocket men billionaire sponsors. To paraphrase Mr Musk "We "can do" humans on Mars! We can do - saying that that is "plan B".
But if you take a look at Mr Musk's (Or any) billionaires 'plan A' lifestyle - you may notice that their billionaire lifestyle, & how they make money, is the problem (venture capitalism).
Capitalism is the problem because, generally, that means that the venture capitalists dominate & monopolise the culture. How's that working out for taking care of the planets life support systems (what are their plan? Profits! Isn't that comparably shallow & narrow minded thinking?)

In general, "net zero" GreenHouse Gas Emissions (GHGE) future, is a context, a culture, in which human activities are not changing the #climate. So, a "net zero" anthropogenic GHGE future, is more sustainable, survivable, for our species than our current trajectory of trying to sustain a society that is based on burning huge amounts of Carbon based fuels. By physics, once fuel is burnt it's gone. Also, burning fuels isn't comparably energy efficient (nor sensible for human health)
Right now, because progress on this issue has been slow, to backwards, humanity is still burning vast amounts of Carbon based fuels. Some of the fuels are being used to develop an energy system in which energy can be generated (transferred from one form to another) using a method that does not burn fuels. #renewables. A sensible use of our "carbon budget".
But, vast amounts of fuels are being burnt doing "stupid". Wasting the GHGE budget- what evidently are crazy behaviours considering that those GHGE are causing #ClimateHeating. Crazy behaviours considering that those behaviours are; humans polluting themselves (the air they breathe).
Within the context of the human population + ecology (mutually inclusive), we need to think sensibly about population numbers. Not population "control", we need to choose to self regulate our population numbers for the sake of all people's (the ecological sustainability of the population) #SystemsThinking
To escape the "net crazy" behaviours society, we will have to use less energy (overall). The larger the human population, the more energy the society needs. For example, to produce food & heating.
What does 'self regulation' of population numbers mean? It means informed consent. If people are aware of the context (education) and have the choice and means to limit their family size ("family planning". E.g., using contraception), then, due to human nature, population sizes will stabilise. That's what happens in "rich" countries. But that wealth can not be sustained by burning fuels.
A stable population size is one aspect of the ecologically sustainable solution. The other aspect is for that population to use energy sensibly (healthcare) - within the planets limits.
