Starting this morning with images of a young Black father (Clint Smith) and his young son enjoying each other's company as well as the beauty of flowers in the park. From Above Ground. ๐บ๐บ๐บ๐บ๐บ๐บ

More poetry from Clint Smith's Above Ground. It's a beautiful book of poetry; many of the poems are lighthearted and dedicated to his two young children. But today I'm drawn to the ones that express dismay at the America his children will inherit. I'll be cheerful another day.

OK, I'm easing up on my campaign to get you to read #ClintSmith 's book
It's been difficult to communicate my strong reaction to this book. I think Dr Smith's book exerts its power through his writing style. It feels like having a conversation with him or listening to a story, not just dry historical facts. And his prose is so descriptive of people and surroundings. Not at all characteristic of your standard history book. You really won't regret having read it.

If you've read #ClintSmith 's How the Word is Passed, you already know what this picture shows. If you haven't read it yet, you really should. ๐ (Told you I'm relentless when it comes to this book.)

I love reading. It's possible to pick up tidbits of information that would have escaped me.
I'm rereading #ClintSmith's How The Word is Passed. He mentioned that #JamesWeldonJohnson wrote #LiftEveryVoiceandSing originally as a poem to celebrate the birthday of #AbrahamLincoln.
I have sung that song my entire life, in high school and #HBCUs, at graduations and awards ceremonies. And I did not know that.

Listening to #clintsmith interview on Fresh Air. This segment and his incredible article in the Atlantic should be required material in schools (and for American, really).

This is one of the books that "awoke" me to the systemic racism and slavery in America. The book? #ClintSmith's "How the Word is Passed." What a tough book to read given the truth it reveals.
"When you challenge people, specifically #white people's conception of Jefferson, you're in fact challenging their conception of themselves. "I've come to realize that there's a difference between #history and nostalgia, and somewhere between those two is memory," he said.
"I think that history is the #story of the past, using all the available facts, and that nostalgia is a fantasy about the past using no facts, and somewhere in between is memory, which is kind of this blend of history and a little bit of emotion...I mean, history is kind of about what you need to know...but nostalgia is what you want to hear."
