Concerns have also been raised regarding animal health and welfare issues potentially associated with the use of #zilpaterol, whereas over 9 in 10 🇪🇺 consumers find it important to protect the welfare of farmed animals. Besides, the latter is a cornerstone of sustainable food production and #FoodSystems in a #OneHealth approach.

Consumers in the EU have no appetite for meat and milk from animals treated with growth promoters. Antibiotics, hormones and steroid residues top the list of food safety-related concerns among EU consumers.

What’s the beef with #zilpaterol? This drug - like other beta-agonists - has been banned for use as a growth promoter in the EU for over two decades. The ban applies to domestic production and imports alike. But some other countries, incl. the US, Brazil and Argentina, allow zilpaterol (and several other growth promoters) to improve muscle growth and feed efficiency in cattle. And these countries consider the EU’s ban as a trade barrier.

Codex standards have far reaching implications for resolving trade disputes. While no country/region is obliged to adopt Codex standards if it wants to apply stricter #FoodSafety measures, it needs to justify these scientifically to apply them to imports too.
