"A strange historical transition will be completed this fall as the Orthodox Church of Ukraine officially abandons the classical Julian calendar still used by the Russian and Serbian national churches."

"The churches that made the change don’t explicitly use the Gregorian calendar, a creation of the Latin church — that would be a step too far in the direction of the West."

"The heritage of case law acknowledges criminal justice’s functions of denunciation, deterrence and social sequestration of extremely determined predators, but as soon as you mention any of these matters to [the former political head of the Department of Public Safety’s corrections and justice directorate], she hears, and begins robotically denouncing, “torture” and “revenge.”"

"The single most interesting part of the Research Co. crosstabs concerns the question: would you have voted for the United Conservatives if Kenney was still leader? Among the UCP voters, 26 per cent said they “moderately” or “strongly” disagreed. [...] Only 15 per cent of New Democrat voters suggested they would have voted for Kenney given the choice"

"But Gord — stolid, fame-averse Gord — just kinda kept on truckin’ with guitar and voice and a handful of chords he never tired of combining in arresting, uncanny ways. Along the way he became one of the most prolific pure hitmakers on earth."

"Next year, the city of London is to gain a new tourist attraction one might have expected to exist all along: a Museum of Shakespeare. It’s a rather strange project designed to preserve — below ground level — the remains of the Curtain Theatre in Shoreditch, which was discovered by archaeologists in 2012."

"The important thing you ought to derive from this exercise is that ChatGPT and other analogous “artificial intelligences” aren’t intelligences in quite the way that we embodied biological beings are. “Its” concern is with generating convincing instances of human language; it has no way of testing its own utterances for truth — no concept, even an implicit one somewhere amidst the linear algebra, of the difference between true and false."

"Liberal criminologists will tell you, while taking a break from applauding Canada’s low incarceration rates, that we can’t consider changing catch-and-release bail rules written forever in stone in 2018. Psychiatrists will tell you, while grieving the effects of deinstitutionalization that their profession unleashed on our cities, that we need to spend greater fortunes on mental health down at the mental health store (which they run)."

"The [SNP] had hoped to secure Yousaf’s coronation with an ultra-quick five-week leadership campaign and shockingly low (£5,000!) spending limits for candidates. Now it may come to regret its “success.”"

"Yousaf’s eventual edge in the last ballot of the race was an excruciating 52.1 per cent to 47.9."

I *think* that they choose subscriber-exclusive content based on what they believe appeals strongly to their users and what they can't get elsewhere: inveighers and always seem to be subscriber-only, whereas writers who reveal new facts are generally ungated.

As to the articles you mention, on 3D-printed guns made the point that other guns were more of a problem in crime, and that someone can make a sturdier gun in other ways.

"[Robert] Antle, 60, is too sick to work and qualifies for welfare with a disability top-up. He lost his apartment last year and moved into a large trailer with a sympathetic friend [who subsequently rented it to Mr. Antle... It's] a little good-news story, that is, about someone in peril of homelessness who found a creative, affordable, appropriate solution. Needless to say, the authorities wouldn’t stand for it."

"British Columbia is, uniquely among provinces, in the midst of a somewhat data-driven conversation about how much property crime and violence is caused by repeat offenders who whiz through the revolving door of the justice system. Criminologists, of all people, have been spotted actually pleading for longer prison sentences — an extraordinary, even shocking sign of systemic dysfunction in crime prevention."

Mostly, I’m just excited for the prospect of a movie that approaches the drama of Second World War bomb research at Los Alamos, N.M., a defining event of the 20th century, with the resources it deserves."

"The basic question raised by conventional fission reactors is, “If we dig a really, really deep hole someplace geologically stable in order to store nuclear waste, is there a chance that an unknown species of molemen might get cancer?” Fusion asks, “Can you ignite a micro-star and harness its output?” I will grant that you have to be impressed that the human species’ answer to this question may now be: “Yes, you can, very, very briefly.”"

"What does all this mean in English? The Alberta legislature is exercising its undoubted sovereign power to let the executive run wild, with advance procedural permission, if it wants; that’s democracy for you, appearing on stage in its traditional garb of parliamentary supremacy. But why should any of this be necessary when the legislature could simply, you know, legislate to meet any instance of federal overreach as and when it appears?"

"Trudeau’s time as prime minister has certainly put Canadians in a position to admire a dictatorial government that can do anything at all other than write cheques. Every day in the People’s Republic of Canada, we seem to read about the collapse of yet another basic function of the state, whether it be sound money, citizenship credentials, criminal justice or hospital care. The latest failure to hover into view is military recruitment."
