(The closest thing I've seen to an explanation is 'a bizarre technicality.') However! Writers Jim Benson and Scott Skelton, who coordinated and did all that work, have announced they'll be turning everything into "the Ultimate Columbo book." I'll take that! Average.
1️⃣ Story-driven entry, with some decent prop gags and plenty of chuckles being generated by repetition.
2️⃣ Guests include #BertFreed (the first actor to play #Columbo).
3️⃣ As with episode 24, the Chief is out in the field with Max and that leads to ample opportunity for comedy.
4️⃣ Agent 99 enters the story late, but she's the one who solves the mystery and gets the drop on the bad guys.

1️⃣ #GeorgeWendt and #RodSteiger are the guests. Wendt is bland, which hampers the episode. Steiger is great as a vengeful mobster. It's a pity he wasn't the murderer, as his scenes with #PeterFalk are terrific.
2️⃣ It's mostly a straightforward story, with plenty of clues for Columbo to find and annoy his victim/suspect with.

One of the very best!
1️⃣ #WilliamShatner is superb as a smug, arrogant killer. Over the two hours we really grow to dislike him for the slimy way he does his job, and the way he treats his daughter (wonderfully played by #MollyHagan, from #HermansHead).
2️⃣ Shatner has great chemistry with #PeterFalk, and all of their scenes are a delight. Many are very funny. Director #DennisDugan really gets the most from his two leads.

1️⃣ #FayeDunaway (deservedly) won an Emmy for this episode. She and #PeterFalk are sensational together. And he also wrote the script!
2️⃣ It’s an unusual one. Because it’s a love story. You might say it’s out-of-character for Columbo to develop actual romantic feelings for his prime suspect. On the other hand, it’s perfectly in-character for him to do what it takes to solve a case. Even if that means letting a letting a bit of temptation into his life. Or… pretending to.
