I decided to try to get a photo of #Comet #Nishimura this morning. Haze, smoke, clouds, and the glow from Omaha just about thwarted me, but it looks like I managed to capture #CometNishimura in the last photo before I ran out of darkness.

A bit of Moondance for January, 2023. January is a busy month with #Earth passing through #Perihelion on the 4th, and a nice view of the #SolarSystem later in the month. #Mercury is setting, but will rise as a morning object late in the month (look to the east around before dawn after the 21st). The remaining visible planets can be seen in the evening sky. You can find #Mars, #Jupiter, #Saturn, and #Venus (from east to west). #Neptune and #Uranus are also up, but require binoculars or telescope. Look for a very close conjunction between #Venus and #Saturn on the 22nd. The two will be separated by ~0.3ห. The #WaxingCrescent #Moon will pass by the pair, giving a nice pattern on the 23rd. The Moon will pass by Jupiter on the 25th, Uranus on the 28th and Mars on the 30th. At the end of the month look for #Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) in the north, near $UrsaMinor. The comet will require binoculars to see. I have attached a sunrise-transit-set table exported out of #MICA from #USNO.

Asteroid Strike Simulator
--
https://neal.fun/asteroid-launcher/ <-- simulator launch page, wordplay very much intended!

โHundreds of thousands of asteroids lurk in our solar system, and while space agencies track many of them, thereโs always the chance that one will suddenly appear on a collision course with Earth. A new app on the website Neal.fun demonstrates what could happen if one smacked into any part of the planet.
Neal Agarwal developed Asteroid Simulator to show the potentially extreme local effects of different kinds of asteroids. The first step is to pick your asteroid, with choices of iron, stone, carbon, and gold, or even an icy comet. The asteroidโs diameter can be set up to 1 mile (1.6 kilometers); its speed can be anywhere from 1,000 to 250,000 miles per hour; and the impact angle can be set up to 90 degreesโฆโ
